Power stearing (where 2 start)
I bought my 1980 RX7 without the power stearing and now i wanna install power stearing on it.
Where do i start? Thanks in advance...:icon_tup: |
They only offered P/S in the later years not in SA's.
I don't know of anyone that has added P/S to their SA. I suppose if you used all of the parts from a P/S vehicle including the steering column then you could make it work. |

I wouldn't want power steering on one of these cars for several reasons, their old which would almost definitely create problems with pump leakage and spool valve internal leak issues that you don't have to deal with on non power steering. It adds weight to the car, and puts more load on the engine. Yes, the stock recirculating ball steering system sucks... its a slow ratio heavy unit prone to wear that came from a truck. If your looking to upgrade your stock steering to something alot better, a rack and pinion kit is what your looking for. I have one of the old cp racing kits on my car,(their no longer in business due to horrible customer service) but i love the kit. Respeed now makes an even better kit that has a whole new front crossmember and a manual rack and pinion for a mustang. Hope i could give you a little insight into the steering system on our first gens. Good luck down there!

look at the ReSpeed Rack and Pinion Kit

Unless I'm mistaken, I think ReSpeed uses a Flaming River rack and pinion unit. I know that Flaming River has TONS of kits out there, so I imagine that their rack might be available as a power rack. Has anyone made up a ReSpeed power rack and pinion setup on their car?

Even though the SAs didn't come with PS, I see no reason why an FB unit couldn't be retrofitted to an SA. ReSpeed's FB unit may even be able to be fitted on an SA. At that point, I would also upgrade to the FB struts, front/rear brakes and even an lsd diff. PM Billy and see what he has to say about compatability.
