Possible Rust Problem...HELP!!
 

hey y'all i need your genius and experiance here...my dad and i got to looking at our sevens (85 GSL & 85 GSL-SE) and they are both starting to leak in the back somewhere and puddling up behind the seat and under the storage bins....GRRRR!!! We have looked and looked but we cant seem to find the source of the water?!?!!? Anyone who has experianced this or anyw\one who knows where to look please help, as both the cars are rust free and we would like to keep it that way! Thanks

uh, its 5am, so have a little patience. I'm off to work. water there is bad, worst place to have it. I'll have to post after work.

Maybe it's the seal for the rear hatch.. I have "fogging" problems in my GSL-SE because the hatch seal is getting old, and isn't doing a very good job. Maybe you could check your seal(s) by spraying water from a hose on your cars?

That's all my brain can come up with.. :confused:

It sounds like close inspection time....
I'd pull the storage bins and examine around the wheel wells. Put the cars rears in the air and pull the rear wheels off. Again, examine around the wheel bins, and examine the storage areas from below. It most likely is the wheel wells that have one or more holes developing and spray from the spinning rear wheels is getting into the storage bin area. With the cars in the air spraying with a hose should assist you in detirmining the problem...

Hopfuly it's not this bad. But it will if you let it. Get some thick undercoating and coat everything you can inside and out.

Check the channel around the rear hatch. There are two drain holes, one on each side. They have a plastic tube running down in the car, and then outside. These drain off any water, rain or whatever, around the hatch. They plug up VERY easily with dirt. Clean them out with a clothes hanger or whatever, make sure they drain. Otherwise, that water will end up in your car.

I would lift the carpit up and make sure the rubber floor plugs are in good shape and all in place,if you have "blasted" into a deep puddle in the last while it could have popped one out ,if there ok check the sun roof draintubes behind the headliner they some times break or come off and cause this kind of problem.same type of tube as for the hatch(see above post) but they run down the B pillar to a drain hole out the bottom of the car. If they break along that route it drains into the car around the seat and storage bins.:)

Can the water go from the back to the bins?

Window/door frame thing leaked and toasted my amp that was behind my seat. I did all new weather stripping and it worked great.

Also check the black cover for the rear wiper if you have one. Mine was full of water and rust. I had to rebuild the motor.

Now I need seals. Covered holes in duct tape.

If you have a sunroof, check that the drainage holes there are not plugged either. Those and the rear hatch ones that hanman pointed out. The hatch ones may be plugged leading to water pooling in the channel and overflowing into the rear. The sunroof ones could be plugged, causing water to leak in around the sunroof, down through the back, or they could be leaking inside through the body itself, and causing pooling in the interior without leaving signs that it has traveled behind the upholstery.

Also, check under your front carpet. If you have AC and use it, it can drip and accumulate. I pulled my carpet for an engine swap two weeks ago (to remove the ECU and harness), and the padding was very damp. The car has not been in rain or snow, or had the AC on for 3 months now...

Um, guys? Between you, you just described the entire car as a potential leak.

Oh, wait: The window glass can sometimes go rusty. Now that's the lot. :D

Welcome to the wonderful world of cars that are 17 years old at the newest. ;)

If you don't know where the water comes from, the process of elimination will be all you have. I can't see the car in question, so if this is your situation you will have to do with advice and looking into it for yourself. :D

If you have exterior holes rusted all the way through the metal, water can come through there as well, through the top, or bottom of the car. :evilgrin:

If it's already wet in there, hosing down the suspected areas may get some diagnostic results.
