ported motor?

i have a 12a with what seems to be great compression i havent installed it yet into my 84 gsl some history about the motor is it came out of an 83 gsl that was raced in OR at a 24 hour endurance race, the motor has an oil cap with Atkins rotary on it i also own the car it came out of full roll cage springs sway bar ss brake lines custom cooling unduction etc. how can i tell if the motor has been ported or not without dissasembly. would it be normal to race a stock motor in a 24 endurance race

It would depend on the class as to whether it was ported or not. Take a peek into the intake and exhaust ports. It'll be obvious whether it was ported or not.

Its only obvious if you know what a stock motor looks like though Carl, lol. If he looks in there and it IS ported, but hes never seen a stock one, its not gonna do him any good, or vice versa, lol. However Brandon, he is right. The exhaust ports are the best way to tell without disassembly.

Well with a flashlight, looking into the intake port (deep in the port not the runner) you can tell if the metal was ground down or if it still has the cast finish on it. And on the exhaust, if the port is smaller than the sleeve then its stock.

actually, if you remove the intake manifold, slide your fingers inside the runners and feel if the ports are small or not.

Like TJ said, doesnt do much good if'n you dont know what a port bigger than stock would feel like. Thats why I suggested the visual with a flashlight to look for evidence of porting, ie: surface texture change.

look on the engine its self. are there any numbers inscibed on it? on atkins motors they have a number starting with ARS. i've seen pinapple motoors that have them also. if it does, you should be able to call them and ask about the motor #.

i looked the motor over and i didnt find the number is the a specific spot i should be looking? also i dont think the motor is ported i do have another motor i know isnt ported that i compared it too thats a bummer but when i turn the flywheel i get very nice loud thumps of air only 200$ for the motor. thanks guys.
