points poorly gapped=surging?
Im still trying to hunt down the cause of my part-throttle surging and high RPM power loss...
Would poorly gapped (but new) points cause this? info: 1979 SA all stock new: alt batt cap+rotor points condensors plugs wires coils voltage reg. oil filter fuel filter i know all about the elec. ignition swap but i want to keep everything original. |

You sure you don't want to go with a nice Electronic DFIS. You could always swap it back. |
I've upgraded several old points rotaries to electronic with DLIDFIS. It's always an improvement.

Well, I know almost nothing about points systems as well, but I don't think gap will cause surging. It is possible the dwell is a culprit though.

in my experience even if you set the points by the correct gap the dwell is still way off, I always got it right with a dwell meter.The FSM calls for 58 deg both T and L I would set it to 60 deg and as the points would burn it would tend to settle to lower angles anyway If you must have points buy an old dwell meter off of ebay or similar the points system is over taxed, before you know it even if you have it right the points burn up and its out of spec I highly recommend upgrading to electronic in some form and keep the original distributor shelved but as part of the car as an exhibit- as needed it can be reinstalled this way you can spend your time with other things you car will need or you can better focus on getting your second RX7 or work on your gargage to keep more rx7's and all the parts you HAVE to get. Take heed, a reference to all those involved who have fallen into and contributed to the posts on the RX7 addiction. If you install points on your cars all you will be doing is reajusting the points. This will tie you up so much, thats all you will be doing and it will stop you from the full blown RX7 habit. Its the secret and the first step to breaking the habit. |
its amazing how easy a job is with the right tool....
i ignored the gap, set the dwell. no more surging, pulls strong to 8000 rpm. took less than 15 min, i didnt even finish my tequila before i had it done. so for those runnning ye olde points, set your dwell properly with a dwell meter. hopefully this simple mistake can be avoided by other, young new 12a owners who are woefully unfamiliar with points-style ignition... |

sounds like its fixed, mine had a worn out breaker plate = random point gap, car didn't like that one bit.
with the new breaker plate, these points were the easiest to set ive ever worked with, set it to the right gap, line up the dots and its right on |
