Please help a new rx7 owner!!!

So i bought a 1985 gs off a friend of mine two weeks ago. I drove the car home 500 miles and it ran fine the whole way. Well i get it home and am working on it last weekend, tearing the interior pieces out of the rear of the car so i can build a box for subs into the back. Well i took out the little cubby boxes the spare tire and all that stuff, and i got down to the amps that are underneath the little glove boxes behind the seats. i decided to just clip the wires going to the amps and i think the key was in the ignition when i cut the group of them because there was a spark, and now the car wont start. I already replaced all 3 of the fusible links that go in the brown box under the hood, and still nothing. The hazard lights work, but not the blinkers. the headlights will flip up and down and turn on, but no windshield wipers. the key just turns in the ingition but the lights that usually light up on the gauge cluster dont turn on and the car wont start. i saw a post on here about there being a fuseable link connection the black/red and black/yellow wires under the stearing column and i found them but it doesnt look like mine has a fuseable link between the two, they are just connected directly to each other. i arced some wires that come out of the little ignition/key cylinder whatever you call it and i can get the engine to turn over, but i didnt try to start it all the way like that for fear of screwing something else up. So if anyone out there knows the cure to my problem please help me out cus the car has been broke down for longer than its been driving since ive had it.

Well, that was stupid. It's easier/better to unplug parts than go cutting wires when you don't know what's what.

FSMs and wiring diagrams are online, link is in my sig line. At this point , I usually welcome new members to the forum and the Darkside, having a problem with that.

And before you even ask or reply, yes, somedays I can be a butthead.

as can i haha anyways it sucks though i havent got to enjoy the 7 yet really. i got to drive it 500 miles home but that was it. and as a former 3000gt owner and being used to driving a tank i was really starting to enjoy driving the tiny ass little mazda.

Check the fusebox under the dash on the driverside. Hope you didn't fry the igmition switch.

Sounds as if you may have blown a fuse. If you cut the wires while hot and noticed a spark, a fuse should have blown to create an open circuit protecting further damage to the electrical system. If a visual inspection of a subject fuse is inconclusive, test with an ohm meter before just replacing at random. Schematics of the circuit will help pinpoint what fuse you may have blown, but even without it you could test/inspect all of them in a minimal amount of time. If you replaced all the links then what is left is checking the fuses in the fuse box.

Ummmm, just a though. Did you happen to cut the power wire to the fuel pump. It is located in the same wiring harness and goes through the floor right next to the amps. Easy one to check.

PYMPSHYT 11-10-06 10:13 PM

i forgot to mention that but no i checked all the fuses first and they all apear to be intact. also no i noticed the wires going through the floor for the fuel pump and those i did not clip so they are still ok. im gonna try going to auto zone tomorrow or something and see if i can rent a multimeter so i can run some test and see where a short might be cus i cant think of anything else it could be, unless there is some kind of factory alarm system... i dunno but for whatever reason killed the power to the ignition when i clipped the wires to the factory stereo. i hope i figure something out, i dont wanna have to pay a tow bill and hundreds of dollars to someone to fix what should be an easy electrical problem

Well... welcome to the forum...

Taking out the storage bins I can understand. Removing the spare to put in subs and amps, I cannot.

Are you building a show car out of this or something? I am just curious as generally we don't get people who want to drop subs and amps into first gen rx7's, and we most certainly don't get people who don't at least unhook the battery before messing with wires... :dunno:

PYMPSHYT 11-11-06 05:24 PM

well i fixed the car today, i dont know how but all the sudden it works again. i messed with the wires trying to hot wire it somehow. then i let it sit for a few hours and came back and the key turned in it and it started right up. as for not unhooking the battery that was stupid, i had a stoner moment.
