Please help .... clutch problems.....
 

so i bought this 83 rx7 last night , and when i was driving it home i noticed that when i stopped the clutch was not engaging as my foot went to the floor ,,,,, today there is no way for me to start the car in gear , i checked the resevior for the clutch fluid and its full ................. im sure im not the only person here to ever have this problem ........please tell me what is going on !

Please clarify:

"...the clutch is not engaging..." tells me that when you let the clutch out with the car in gear, it won't move forward.

"....there is no way for me to start the car in gear..." tells me that the clutch is engaged all the time.

What is really happening?

well try to change you slave cylinder or your presure plate is gone down the crapper

Eric, first of all welcome to the forum.

There are some things that you need to become familar with. One of them is the archives for 1st gens. The other is the search button. And yes this has been covered a billion times.

What he is saying is as he puts his foot on the clutch it is not disengaging.
Most common is hydraulics. Ie;Clutch master cylinder and slave.
What you can do is lift the pedal up and down manually to try and gain some hydraulic pressure. It sounds like a bad spot in the bore of the Clutch master cylinder.

The fluid could be full because the person you bought it from was having a problem and just filled it but did not inform you of this.

Also remove the dust boot at the slave cylinder and see if it is wet ( meaning that it is leaking)
Your either going to need a clutch master or slave or both. My recommendations is if one is bad replace the other because of the excess wear caused by the other.

sorry for not being specific enough ................. i found that my slave was leaking so i bought the kit for 13$ and rebuilt it , clutch feels pretty good ,,,, occasionally still a little spongy ,( i did get all the air out )

now ......... when i start the car in any gear with the clutch pedal down the car sits for two seconds and then takes off ........ and obviously it runs fine in neutral

my master isnt leaking any fluid , should i rebuild it aswell or, is this a pressure plate problem as cody666 suggested ......?

Clutch master does not have to leak to be bad internally. Sounds like it is bypassing inside and losing pressure. Recommend replacing clutch master.

For long service life and trouble free driving, I have found it best to change out the master, slave and hose. When replaceing the slave or the master, the other one often soon fails due to it's age.

Since you still have a spongy feel and the clutch isn't disengaging completely, replace all of it with fresh parts and bleed the system until the fluid is clear. If you don't replace the hose and the fluid soon turns darker, the hose is on it's way out.
