Do any of you have pics of an aftermarker radio you have put in your Rex? I have an 85 and putting one in this coming week. I was curious because of the weird size of the radio opening. The installs I have seen using a kit have been pretty bad looking in my opinion.

That is a very classy looking install. Much better than the cheap plastic panels I have seen that done with. I like the deck to, same as mine:)

well dude if you decide to go something similar i still have the templates used to mount the head unit to the existing metal bracket. it places the head unit so that it's face is flush with the panel. most of the kits i have seen stick out horribly and require tacky plastic trim rings that dont quit fit. i was avoiding that in my design.

It looks pretty good, and there is the potential for a pocket below if you are crafty with whatever you use to make it out of. Like I said that guy Mantis made a nice looking cup holder out of sheet metal. My space below is concealing the crossovers for my Bostons up front.....it is a mess in there but you cant see it.

Like I said before I may later get a sticker made of "The Mound" in classy looking script. Spraypaint the panel so I get "the Mound" clear, and then backlight it in amber. Real trick man. Maybe hook it up to the tach to act as shift lights...Mo, shift second, Mou, shift third, Moun, shift fourth, Mound, you're cruisin now baby....

I would love to see the templates. I was thinking of hiding my component crossovers in there also. Maybe trying to fit a few guages also.

I like that. If you get something insane like that working, I'd like to see it in person.

Damn, that is nice also? Does the drink holder affect the shifter when driving?

I assume the drink holder slides back into the console when not being used?

I bought a "shit kit" from wal-mart. It sucked sooooo bad. I ended up trimming, cutting, gluing parts on it, and basically coming up with my own kit, but it fits like a charm--i'll see to it that I get pics of it. It's held for bout a year now and looks real good :)

The shifter is in 1st gear in that pic and there was still a few inches of room...

and yes, the cupholder slides into the dash when not in use, leaving just a strip of stainless steel showing to compliment the silver stereo faceplate.

Yeah well it is a great place to hide the crossovers. It does get messy with all of the connections on the Nak 45 but it fits fine.

Do you have autocad? I can e-mail you the files if you do...I just printed them on sticker paper and adheared them to the metal bracket and drilled away. I did the same for the Lexan.

well yes, but an '84-'85 has a huge hole in the dash if you take out the stock radio. The problem is finding an attractive way to plug it with gauges, a cubby hole, or whatever.

'79 to '83 dashes are so much simpler with their 1 DIN slot.

Manntis - On those kits, is the bottom space a full din? Just curious for future install options. Looking at maybe adding a full DIN EQ. Just wondering if it will fit, or the space is just a tad too small.

this is a bad pic but you still get the idea. Just take out the tape deck and the aftermarket deck slides right in. Then i bolted it in, harder to steal now.

btw...anyone know how hard it is to put 6 x 9's in the rear stock holes....(i know i have to cut some metal....but i dont really want to have boxes for the 6x9's as well as the subs:)

The stereo is 1 DIN, and the other two are like 3/4 DIN. With my cupholder design there's room for stereo, cupholder, and one of a full DIN EQ; a cubbyhole; or a 3-gauge addition.

Incidentally my Mark II design cupholder/stereo bracket incorprates either the cubby or the 3-gauge addition with one piece of brushed stainless acting as a faceplate.

It has 6 3/4" wide cutouts to accomodate a detachable face stereo and have everything else lined up nicely, so I'm unsure if the face of a full DIN EQ would fit through without grinding a 1/8" from each side.

As to cutting for 6 x 9s there's plenty of room there but there's an opening in the metal just aft of the speaker(front to rear of the car, not the back of the speaker), so it may be easier for you to craft a 6 x 9" mount out of a sheet of thin metal, then cut out an oversixed portion around the speaker in the frame and rivet it in. Otherwise you might not have support for the half of the speaker nearest the back of the car.

Yeah, I was all happy that I had that kind of interior until I realized that I have NO PLACE I can put some gauges, other than an a-pillar pod, or MAYBE trying to fit some in where that pocket is...Otherwise, I have to do some "creative" work.

PS - Does anyone have the stock pocket and clock for the 79-83 interior? I have the upgraded stereo, and when I get my aftermarket stereo, I'll have no use for the equalizer and the fader...So I plan on swapping them out (I have no clock :()
