Pic Request: Inside Fuel Door

Hey all -

This may seem a bit odd, but I need to find a picture of inside the fuel door.

I need the picture to be of the back of the fuel door as well as near the hole for the fuel nozzle.

Somehow I managed to NOT put it together correctly resulting in my door not to open with the switch.

Thanks to whomever can contribute!

Chris

What kind of gas cap are you using?

I have this stupid locking one that won't let the door pop open because of how tightly it fits, always have to use the key. :(

(I was a genius and left my gas cap on the car after filling her up one day... so used to those damn little holders in the modern cars! :wallbash:)

Also did you try the FSM? it seems like that would be the best place to look. I would post some pics, but i am out of town right now. :( Sorry.

Are you looking for an SA or FB fuel door?

rxtasy3 12-30-07 07:14 PM

it could just be that the plunger mechanism just needs cleaned and lubed. that was my problem.

chris_g 12-31-07 12:52 AM

hey guys -

Sorry about that, I have an 84 so I would prefer an FB picture :)

The 'plunger mechanism' isn't the problem unfortunately. I checked that numerous time HOPING it would be the problem. The problem itself is I was stupid when I took that apart as it was the last thing to take off before paint. Now it takes two people to fill up!

I do not have the key one, haha. I wish it was that simple too. I am not sure what FSM is but I will do a quick search for it.

Thanks!

so the actuator works, it just wont pop the door open. correct? I'm too lazy to go all the way outside to check mine, but i would think that there is a small spring that pushes on the door. Do you have anything like that?

FSM is factory service manual, search for trochoid its in his sig line. make sure to get the right one for your year of rx7

This is the picture of my '85 -SEs fuel door. I'm not sure if it'll help, tho.

Holy cow man, clean that thing up, lol

85 FB 01-01-08 12:28 PM

Yeah, I noticed how filthy it was today when I took the picture. Eh, I'll get around to cleaning it up when it gets warmer. Out of sight, out of mind!

lol, yeah, winter sucks

If you look in that picture provided, although kinda hard to see but on the left hand side where the 2 screws hold the door, there should be another piece in there thats basically a bent piece of metal. When you close the door it creates pressure and so when the solenoid is activated it pushes the door out. Also to manually open the door, go from the hatch, reach in behind the speaker panel (you don't need to remove anything), and you can access the tab that open that solenoid. What you want to do is pull on it with one hand, and with the other you want to grab a flat head screw driver and a clean cloth to wrap around not to scratch anything, then open up the door. 100 forum buck say that your metal piece isn't in there.

I'll agree to that, the metal tab is probably missing, was on one of my cars, got the tab on there and it opens just fine.

Vashner 01-02-08 01:52 PM

LOL I thought my rusty was bad. That's dirt 4 the win. (the pic).

Was there a birds nest in there or something? Geeze...

85 FB 01-02-08 05:21 PM

Probably from the new gas cap I stuck on the thing, I don't know.

If it bothers you THAT much, come on up here and clean it for me. :rlaugh:

Does anybody know where to get this metal tab piece of spring steel or whatever. Is there a part number or should I just shove a reed valve in there?

GSLSEforme 08-02-17 09:03 PM

Yup,rob the motorcycle parts bin!lol P.S. good thinkin

Qingdao 08-02-17 10:01 PM

Any idea of size or how its oriented?

I didn't have any issues before I took it off for paint... It must have sprung off and disappeared. I have no idea of what it looks like or where it goes.

Mivroum 08-03-17 01:36 AM

I imagine you refer to that thing:

It is not just good eyes, I have changed mine recently, but the car is nowhere near me at the moment.
The metal tab below the hinge is the spring you are mentioning.
I could do a better picture on satursday if needed.

I am also having an issue with my fuel cap door accept its sticking out and won’t seem to stay closed . You push it close and seems it stays out and not lock into something

You may have to adjust the metal locking tab. Sometimes they get bent outwards and will not allow the fuel door to close properly or git flush with the body when closed.
