It's a slinger to keep dust and muck away from the seal. Aftermarket driveshafts don't come with them and most cars don't have them so I wouldn't worry about it.

The tricky part is, what went boom? And how did that thing come off? Slide the driveshaft yoke into the trans and see if it wobbles around inside the trans, it's possible that the bushing in there died and is allowing the yoke to move around. Or, maybe you just hit something just right and knocked that sliger off...

the driveshaft is scratched on one part. i took the driveshaft out and put the cars into the gears and no noise was there. now can i put the driveshaft back without that cover there?

so i can put the driveshaft back in (no slinger there) and hook it up to the axle and see if it makes the noise, if it does its the seal inside the tranny is bad do i have to rip apart tranny or just replace seal in back?

Did you wobble-check the driveshaft in the trans?

It's not the seal you are checking, it's the bushing.
