Peeling Bumper Strips
 

So, I got back from some Saturday driving, and parked my car. As usual, I got out and stepped back a few feet to admire my RX-7, when I saw that the bumper strip behind the left rear tire is peeling!

Am I better off removing it and buying a new one, or Is there a cheap and safe way to stick that bugger back on?

P.S. What the hell is up with this text stuff?
When i was done writing my post, I noticed that two words had no space in them, so I went back and put in a space, and the friggin thing deleted the first letter of the second word! So I typed it back in, and it deleted the letter in front of it! Why doesn't it just put a space in when you go back and add letters, instead of deleting the letters in front of it? That really gay. I hope it's just my comp.

Remove the whole strip. Clean and remove any and all old 3m tape. Go to a paint and supply store and get you some 3M double sided molding tape, reapply and presto its on. By the way the warmer it is outside the better it will stick :D

adam.. you hit the insert key on your keyboard... that key toggles between insert and overide...

Eh, keep them off. That 3m tape hold water, and can peal paint. Its a simple recipe for rust. I pulled all of mine off, and unfortunately, half the paint came with them.... :(

i personally think that the car looks cleaner without the side strips.. i have had them off on both of my sevens

Humm let me ponder that one, lets see the alternatives. We could silicone it, but that would create a pocket and therefore cause rust. Oh we could screw it in the body, no thats no good cuz 1) it would look like shit, and 2) it will create a pocket for rust... :D Im playing with ya. But its the only way to do it cleanly and quickly. Im personally running my car w/o it , I think it looks better :D

Remember what they're there for - nothing worse than some idiot slamming your door in a parking lot and ruining a good paint job. IMO, If you keep them in good shape they don't look bad on the car (except maybe white cars) - I use Mother's rubber trim treatment to keep them shinny and new looking and I've noticed on a couple of occasions that they were marked up after parking in a parking lot - probably saved me some touch up work. It's totally a matter of opinion what you do here - just thought I'd give you another angle to ponder

I'm in the same boat as Northern 7 - they look pretty nice when they're shined up, and they serve a useful purpose... although I definitely think 7s look nicer without, I'd rather keep the protection. Especially since I live in a student slum and park in a driveway with 10 other cars lol

They only help when you got another car that has the same basic door height as the 7... not too many of them anymore :( especially with all the SUV crap around... :) Molding is basically useless anymore

I agree with you on the SUV's (and minivans, pick-ups, etc). As for other cars, I think the moulding helps - it sticks out a good 1/2" or more and many car doors will make contact with the moulding before another part of the door. When the first gen's hit the market, there were not that many cars that were as low then either - there's also shopping carts to consider although some will still cause damage above the rubber. My cars black and the moldings are not an eyesore in my opinion - and the rubber on mine has also saved me a ding or two in the past, whether from a car door, cart, bike, or whatever and that is what they were put there for. That's really all I'm saying here -

they definatly can be useful in situations (but chances are those bloody suv's will hit over them). i still like the look better without them.

Freakin insane. I came on here to ask if the same question, should I pull them or not? Got my answer. Based almost entirely on Max7's pic, I'm losing em. That looks really clean and slick without them. Also, I don't think that they would look that good on a black car (which is what mine will be).

i like them on mine, but looks great on the red and silver cars i've seen without them. the same one fell off my car, and it's always the one i see falling off other 7's too. could it be from gas dripping on it? it's the one right below the filler.

the only thing i don't like about the cars without 'em is that the marker lights stick out from the body.

Driving and the thing flew off the car, lol. Now there's ugly tape gunk left there.. how can I get that off?

put it on with liquid nails! i actually know someone who did that.
anyways, go to the local automotive paint shop. 3M makes a trim remover specifically for this. it makes it all gooy and i rubs off with a little work. mineral spirits works to a degree, but unless you want to spend all day doing it get the 3M.

i dunno, it does look a little cleaner with out the rub strip. but the maker lights sticking out bugs me, so mine are staying.

a little water/ mud does get behind them, but i've never had a problem with rust there on any of my cars.

I cant get the lower strip of tape off. I have been soaking it in 3m adhesive cleaner for 2 days and it isnt any softer. What should I use. The top peice came off easy.

Try wd40? It is good for removing stickers so maybe it'll work on hte strips. Worse case it'll lube the rust!

itz next to imppossible to get it all off.. and make the paint looks like it was never there.. if you notice.. "most" of the rexes with the moldings off.. have been repainted.. including mines. becarefull you don't scuff the paint.. or blemish the clear coat..cause it will look crappy when your done.
