Overspray fix.. it's MAGIC and more
 

I recently repainted my engine compartment and managed to get overspray
overeverything.

We’re talking the real thing as to paint acrylic urethane. Once it dries it doesn’t like to go anywhere.

I am in a major rebuild for 06 as usual and muttered to myself another item on the “to do” list. A few days later I’d had it up to here on something and thought I’d take a break and so why not mess w the overspray.

So I started w alcohol, uh no that didn’t work. And worked my way up to lacquer thinner. It sort of worked and actually didn’t wreck the paint but it was a lot of WORK. And it ate thru my rubber gloves and my skin wasn’t too happy.

Back to other “to do” items.

I called the paint place and they guy said he would have his son call and he could take care of it.

O K, another thing off the list… but the phone never rung.

Yesterday my wife attended a “Detail Day” presented by our Wisconsin RX Club. Upon return she offered that fellow club member and presenter Dave Bonnett causally mentioned that CLAY would remove overspray.

UH HUH.

I had used clay as part of my Zaino adventure in ’99 and was quite impressed w how it removed all the crap that somehow gets in your paint, but remove rock hard acrylic urethane paint. I doubt it.

But being a dutiful husband, and a bit desperate, I hunted down my clay. I almost felt like putting a bag over my head as I started the process.

And then, MAGIC!!

The clay removed the paint without breaking a sweat.

O K some of you know this. I merely post this for those who don’t.

BTW, if you have never used clay, you have a treat in store. Clean a fender, wax it and run your hand over it. Chances are it will feel waxy but rough. Do the clay thing and it will feel like a mirror.

cool stuff man, def good info to know when dealing w/ a messy situation life your self :). Too bad you didn't take any before and after pictures, that would have been interesting to see. Good luck w/ all of the other To Do List items

yep the stuff works great! it doesnt take a layer off of the real paint either, like buffing does

lol!, my brother just bought some clay the other day. hey, that rhymes, no im not gay......

but he did buy some the other day, it worked great.

i actually enjoy claying a car, only if my 7's paint was worth claying. used it a lot on my other cars and it really works well :score:

??? i dont get it....bought some clay what are you talking about......i dont mean to be dumb but are you talking about like orange clay crap or is this some kind of thing you buy or what

youre probably mixing thigns up. claying lifts away contaminates like fall out (little micro metal bits [ from rail roads, factories, etc] that causes rust), dead paint [faded dead single stage paint.. sort of like.. dandruff). but claying smooths the surface of the paint to prep it for polishing or sealant/wax. buffing/polishing takes away the defects by shaping the edges of the scratchs/swirls (swirls are micro marring/scratches). so buffing doesnt really take off as much paint as you think. polishing also cleans the paint more to really prep it for the last step which is sealant or waxing.

its a clay bar that you buy in a kit, comes with a lube of some kind to help it slide across the paint. it picks up any impurities on the paint. sap, road debris, overspray, or anything else to make your paint rough and less shiney.

BTW, the clay i used was purchased from Zaino.

I know you can get clay at Autozone, probably most other places too.
