overheated
i was driving the moutains last nite after the enjoyment of the rear end swap. pushing it decently, then poped one of my coolant lines. then as the title says, i over heated. coasted the way down, and engine started smoking. the engine temp was at the max.
wat i want to kno is...is the engine warped? still drivable or is it time for a new engine? |
You won't know 'til you try it ( unless you open it up and see... which is destructive analysis for sure ).
After repairs to the coolant system and checks of fluid levels and plugs, etc. did it crank normally ? Same idle ? Check compression ? Feel like the same power and acceleration ? You can diagnose at least to that point. BTW, which moutains were you traveling through ? ;) |

Why did you keep driving?
Seems like if you knew it was running hot, you would have pulled over. I'd tow it home before I drive it until it smokes. ? |
no insurence.. after it started smoking, i stopped the car and ran water in the radiator. it kept the temp in the middle of the gauge...

I agree with above. Does it start, idle and run? The last thing to check is to see if the coolant reservior tank bubbles while the engine's running. If so, you've got a leak from the water jacket into the combustion chamber.
I don't like to re-live that experience as I lost a really good 85 that way. |
I have to agree that it is gone.
Even if it lived through the over-heating, running what i assume was cold water through the system would have been the final straw. a temp change from the 220+ to the 40-60 degree in coming water is huge. |
having the engine gone isn't that bad.... i want a 13b soon too. think i can just take the car to school and stuff still? when taking it home running only water, it ran fine..i suppose..

If it runs fine then I would say you can drive it where ever you want (but you might not want to get too far from home!). I overheated mine a little, but it still pulls strong. You might have gotten lucky. Of course, mine didn't overheat so bad that it smoked, but hey maybe luck was on your side that day. Good luck.

If it still runs ok it's probably not fatal, didn't do it any good though. If the rotor housings get too hot then the seals grab the chrome, peel it up, apex seals break, and it's all over. Biggest problem is to make sure you aren't loosing coolant or you may have killed it.
