OK something wierd happened today...........
 

Well it was a beautiful friday here in San Antonio, TX (71 degrees and the sun out) and i was about to go on my way to go run some errands. Well i got to my FB like usual and start her up and begin the warming process. Well i do something a little different today (which i probably shouldn't have done but i learned now) I pull the choke and she starts right up. From here i usually push the choke back in and just rev her to abour 2.5 - 3 grand and do this till shes wrmed up. Today however i deceded to leave the choke (from what i thought was its job to begin with even though i never do it that way) pulled out and leave her alone while she warms up with the choke pulled back. Anyways after about 2 mins she starts smoking abonormally (AND NOT FROM THE MUFFLER). I was like holy shit did she catch fire so i turn her off and proceed to open the hood. I open her up and i see all this smoke coming from the tranny area underneith the car (i looked under and saw smoke coming form the tranny area. I thought to my self what the fuck just happened. I checked all her fluids and everything was ok. Before i shut her off to examine here i saw that her temp was fine as well (not overheating what so ever ). Well i let her rest for about 5 mins and the smoke dissapered. So now i decided to turn her on again (like usual choke her for like 3 secs and push back in and rev her to 3k) and what do i find.....NOTHING. No smoke....no wierd noses...no anything. So i decide to go on my planned day of running my errands. Well i run all the errands i need to and keep an eye on her while i was driving her and she was fine. Nothing happed she drove like usual...GREAT. So i was just wondering if you guys knew what that could have been....did i choke her in the wrong manner???? I have no idea. Any input guys would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

i've always pulled the choke and kept it up while starting and i've never had a problem. i'm not sure what to tell ya

there are a few things that could hav happened. it could have backfiried or misfired. the carb won't catch on fire but there could be a lot of smoke from it. another thing is some fluid could have spilt on the rear rotor. If you still have your cats on the exhaust leaving the choke open makes the car run extremely rich when warming up and not all the fuel is used. it collets in the cat and it could have been smoking. it kind of all depends on what the smoke smelt and looked like.

if it's white and a sweet smell it's anti freeze burning.
if it's blue to the color and stink smells like oil, it's oil burning
if it's grey with no smell it's extra fuel not being burnt
if it almost clear and smells like roten eggs/sulfer it's the cats

the only other things i could think of would be trani fluid is low. but the trani would would have to be extremly hot and probably would have seized up. so thats doubtful. my guesses are as followed.
your oil pan has a leek towards the rear and it was just burning off the oil.
other possibility and more likly is that the slave cylinder on the clutch system is leaking, either the bleeder valve or bad solinoid. it leaked on the rear part of the engine and was being burt off. you can tell this is the problem is your clutch feels loose when you get in the car. you pump it a few times and it tightens up.
the last thing is the back fire.

If i saw white smoke with a sweet smell to it.....like you said it was antifreeze burning....Am I in bad shape...if so how bad?

Also how would antifreeze be buring all the way back there?

I pull the choke ,start it up do the necessary things like seat belt gloves and stuff , engage and go , when it is time for it to do so the choke snaps in, no problem.

could it be that the smoke from your exhaust was just blowing to the front??? (sorry had to ask)

When I start my car with the choke pulled out, it makes funny "brap, brap" noises with a huge plume of blue smoke. But a few minutes later, the noise goes away and the car revs up high (to around 2-3,000 rpm) and when it's heated up the choke goes back in and I idle at 1,000rpm???

I would take a look at the catalytic converters. The choke with the richened mixture could have caused the exhaust to heat up especially if the timing is off. A few times when my cat got hot, it did the same thing as you mentioned. The cat will burn off residue off the transmission or the cat itself. Mine was because the previous owner removed the heat shields and the main cat would get hot in traffic. This heated up the end of the transmission causing the rear seal to leak oil onto the converter which then would burn off. I have since gutted the cat and put heat shields back on. No problems now.

If it is coolant, the only way I would think of it getting there is from the intake o-rings leaking. This could cause coolant to drip on the exhaust which would then burn off.

Only time I've had smoke up the front of my car is where the transmission rear extension housing seal/yolk plug has been leaking onto my cat. Basically if the engins off, the smoke comes up betwen the engine and firewall, or if it's on it was blown out under the side or back.

I'm sorta with you on this- I would guess the cats lit off the rich mixture (maybe too rich) and burned some crapola off the exhaust pipes. I couldn't imagine simply pulling the choke would cause some kind of failure in the coolant system.
