ok so i have the t2 hangin in the engine bay (write up)
 

this thread is for the progress of my t2 swap into my 83 gsl(not se)
this is for those who dont have the gsl-se the full write up will eventually be posted on my webpage with depending on profit margin the custom mounts that we are making

along with total moneys spent

the t2 motor is hangin there
with the shifter and t2 tranny attached and lined up

i look from the side and notice hey the engine pops out above my hood!!!

(btw i have decided not to go with the front cover and oil pan swap)

so im sitting here thinkin how am i going to get the engine mounted so i can still do oil changes (the plug is guarded by the steering main bar.

i will deal with that later

right now im worried about 2 things

how im going to make the engine mounts
and...
where can i get the custom driveshaft made

Swap the oil pan and front cover.

i would have and i had a seller lined up but he was hard to get in touch with and was taking too much time

but then i said "hey why not keep the electric omp"

plus i could always plug the regular hole and drill and tap another one ( you might say but the regular hole is at the lowest point in the pan) but there are other low points in the little dip that will be good enough for a hole


i have also made a custom tranny mount for the stock cross member and turbo tranny seeing as how the holes on the t2 tranny are at a different angles as the 83 5 speed

Doesnt the electric OMP use the stock ECU? What about people who are going to use aftermarket ECUs and have no need for the stock OMP because the ECU cant control it?

It just sounds like far too much work for anyone to possibly be interested in buying motor mounts that require a custom (expensive) oil pan, and blah blah blah. Its much easier to just swap the parts from another car onto it. You can use any front cover, you just need a 13B pan.

It just seems to me like youre trying to come up with a better way of doing something, and if there was a better way, someone wouldve come up with it already, lol. It just seems too simple to just get the parts from a spare engine, throw em on, and bolt the damn thing in without making anything all custom and creating headaches.

As for your driveline, look in the yellow pages for a driveline shop, and find out what they charge to make one. Theres a shop out by me thats custom making the one for my Toyota 4x4 for $1 per inch of tube, plus $57 labor, so about $115 out the door. Most people I know spend about $300 on a good quality 3" tube that will hold the power of the T2 though. Make sure you tell them youre going to be putting some good power to it so they build a beefy one.

i have the resources to fabricate most anything except for driveshafts and other things of the sort.

we like creating headaches

Why not just use the SE oilpan and front cover?It will solve all your problems and its relatively cheap.If you can fabricate and weld,its not a huge task to make the S5 oil metering pump fit the SE front cover,did it on my S5 swap.

the engine mounts that were working on now are carbon steel

which are as light as the stock mounts


custom does not always mean expensive

No, but sometimes it's easier to NOT Re-invent the wheel.

As long as it works, and you're happy - then it's all good.

Sorry, I assumed you were planning on selling them because you mentioned a profit margin from them, I mustve misread.

Anyway, I wish you luck on your project. You came here to ask us for help it seemed, we told you how to make it work, you said flat out "no". Seems to me like youve got it under control.

no i was offering a write up on acount of my extensive searching but only finding write ups for gsl-se's

oh and i was considering selling some of the mounts for those who would like to keep the electric omp

with the new mounts made and the tranny mounts fabbed. we put the key in and turned the wheels to check for steering clearance.

when turned middle full way left it hit and same with the right. we are raising the tail of the tranny to solve this problem.

Your making this harder than it needs to be and for what? Just go to a salvage yard and source a se oilpan.
