oil cooler lines?

i just picked up a 1986 air-oil cooler for $9.99 at a local pick a part type place to replace my 1985 GS water-oil cooler. So i need some new oil cooler lines, do the 2nd gen oil cooler lines a 'direct' fit to the 12A motor?

thanks,

I don't believe they are a direct swap in type of deal

the lenghts of 2nd gen ones are all worng, you can however use some of the old metal lines as template, take to a hose and rubber place, and have them made...

I know RB sells the adapters or something of that sort?

Your also gonna need a pre 83 or -SE, oil pedestal, too replace the oil cooler mount on there now...

i also took the oil filter pedestal from the 2nd gen i got the oil cooler from. And don't the lengths just matter where i end up mounting the cooler (or better yet just limit where i can mount the cooler)? More importantly, do the oil cooler hose fittings match on 12A and 13B motors (or 1st and 2nd gen)?

Mazdatrix sells the hose's ..stainless steel, or regular.
you may also need to fab. some mounts for the O.C.
install a oil filter pedestal.and plumb the lines, after
the O.C.'s installed,may as well change the oil,,right ?
you have more capacity for oil, so start from 0-- to full.

which ones? just standard 86+ hoses? Do 2nd gen's simply 'bolt' up, same fittings for 12A and 13B?

MIKE-P-28 06-03-02 09:21 PM

Never tried them on mine 12A I had, but the thread pattern looks the same, but the length and shape is wrong. The hoses are routed a different way in a 2nd gen...

MarkPerez 06-03-02 09:44 PM

yeah,thats right,,12a hoses for a 12a,,but see,,where
are you going to mount the O.C. ??the hoses that say
mazdatrix sells are for stock mounting the O.C. under
the rad.if you mount the O.C. anywhere else, you'll need
longer hoses,,so maybe the 2ed gens is what you'll need..mount the O.C. first...then see what you'll need
for hose lenght's

derrick 06-03-02 10:38 PM

i'm going to try and mount it on or above the front tubular brace, so i think the length will work (or i can mount it so they should work), and i think i can get the lines through routing wise, and i will need to modify the radiator support to get the top by... But are the fitting the same, does anyone know?

MarkPerez 06-03-02 11:01 PM

yeah,,same threads. when mounting the O.C. try useing
some rubber,to soft mount it,because O.C.'s can crack

thanks mark.

I'm going threw all of this right now on my 83'. I picked up a used cooler from an 82 however, but not for that cheap...damm! Anyhow...I went ahead and got a new 3 row radiator (79-82) from mazdatrix and picked up a fan shroud from a junkjard which gave me the room to mount the cooler. I went with the mazdatrix stainless lines, which are the best in my opinion. The stock lines are way to expensive obviously and the racing beat stainless ones require all sorts of adapters to go back and forth from -AN to metric.
Depending on the condition of your radiator, I would really give some thought to going with the shorter, but thicker radiator...it makes it allot easier.

mwpayne 06-04-02 05:24 AM

Can you use the radiator out of a 2nd gen in the 1st gen? The guy that's gonna do mine has one, plus the oil cooler, I'm thinking the cooler and radiator swapped together may work?

MarkPerez 06-04-02 01:36 PM

the 2ed gen rads. are tilted forward, and some use a
remote filler in-line..i would say to use a 1st gen rad.
and the 2ed gen O.C.
