Oil cooler leak

My car is leaking oil and I am about 45% sure its coming from the oil cooler. ( Well 45% sure thats on of the spots leaking) Anyways My question is, are oil coolers nessacery on this car? or can i remove it? and if I do what are the concicuinces?

One other thing that I have asked several diffrent times and never got a answer it seems to be a question when I ask people just stop replying. My car smokes at higher rpms it is blue smoke and I was one told that it "could" be my carb or it could be my apex's. But I was told if my apex's are bad then I would have trouble starting my car. Some days my car kinda floods out when trying to start it but I just hold the gas down and it starts and other days it fires right up. So I wouldnt say that I have any harder a time starting my car then any other car of the same age.

ok let's see if i can help with some search results for "blue smoke". blue smoke is oil and it's not apex seals, it's the oil control "O" rings. and no u can't do away with the oil cooler. if the engine didn't need it mazda wouldn't have put them on it in the first place. if u have the water cooled one(behive) it's probable just an O ring.

People stop replying because they don't want to be the ones to give you the bad news. I believe DD is correct. The oil control rings seal the lubrication oil out of the combustion chambers. When they get old and brittle, they leak. Too much oil in the combustion chamber = blue smoke.

When I got my Cosmo with 40,000 miles the original engine had this problem. The car had spent most of its life unused :( It would randomly emit giant clouds of smoke as I drove. The longer I drove it the less it smoked. After a year the water o-rings started leaking...

The only real solution is to replace the control rings which requires rebuilding the engine.

You don't have an automatic do you? What year?

My oil cooler isnt the behive I guess cause its not water cooled. Its mounted below the radiator. My 7's not an auto its 1979-1980 a manual 5 speed.

So where exactly is the oil control rings? Im guessing that means that if I need a rebuild then its not in my carb. Im guessing it's one of the side seals on the rotor. By fixing that will it solve my problem with low rpm jerking while im driving? And will it help with what it seems like my engine trying to flood when I try to give it gas from an idle?

chances r the oil leak is coming from one of the oil lines, either top or bottom. or the threaded part of the cooler is actually split. the oil control rings r on the rotors, and a rebuild is the only way to replace them. and the low rpm jerking is a tuning problem with the carb.
