i fear it's about time for a rebuild, i went to start the car today and god awful amounts of blue smoke came out, so i shut it off quickly, checked the oil. oddly low - i just topped it off yesterday? pulled the bottom front plug, pretty soaked in oil. it's not carbon build up, it's wet and i put new plugs in yesterday also.

i'm going to check it tomorrow morning again and see if it was just a freak incident, but what should I look at to fix here? why would i be passing that much oil? my oil also smells slightly sour too, which is new to me..

You need to check your crankcase vent system before panicking too hard... if pressure is allowed to build up in the crankcase (bad or blocked vent system) it can force oil past the oil-control rings into the rotor chambers.

i am totally unfamiliar with the vent system on these, how do i go about checking them?

i think it's doing it from sitting, though. wouldn't it only go thru the vent system while it was running?

There's a vacuum line at the bottom of the oil fill tube. Pull the line off and plug the hose. There should be little if any pressure coming out of that tube. If it starts shooting oil spray/vapor, your oil control rings are toast.

A quickie rebuild is all it takes.

any thought as to maybe a thicker oil to counter the oil control rings leak?

also try this next time you top off your oil add about 1/4 quart of ATF the de tergant in the ATF will help clean out gunk from the egine and MAYBE JUST MAYBE it could clean something that is not letting the oil control ring do its job

Not a good idea using ATF. If the oil control o-rings are on their way out, old oil sludge and carbon build up are helping keep what sealing capacity is left. Remove that with the ATF and the engine may smoke many times worse.

If anything, add some Lucas Oil Stabilizer along with 20W50 oil.

i think i figured out what the problem was today. i smoked a little on start-up in the morning for like 5 -10 seconds, no more.

i said i topped it off - i almost think my dipstick is not correct. it read where it did before i topped it off, and is not smoking. going to really keep my eye on it for a few days to find out, and will check the vent system, also.

can someone measure the total length of their dipstick and then measure the distance from the bottom of the stick to the bottom of the rubber gromet that stops it from falling in? (god that sounded dirty)

if it's not that, I'm going to assume there's a reason why it can't hold a full amount of oil, and rebuild it.

is your omp blocked off?
if not i would get the block of plate and pre mix its always safer and it could be the reason your loosing oil

I'm not quite sure my omp is working, but i am pre-mixing even with it on. after i remove the smog pump i'm going to either re-build or remove the omp.

i think the long bar that comes off the front of the carb to the omp on the front of the block isnlt working correctly - that's part of that system, right? i was doing a little research on it, i think i'm figuring it out.

it could be getting stuck open and sucking all kinds of oil out of the pan if your already pre mixing just block it off you will have peace of mind.

Even if the OMP was stuck full open, it would not deliver enough oil (or suck it in??) to cause a noticeable amount of smoke.
