OEM Cassette player problems
 

Hey guys-

I've got a 1983 GS RX-7, with the factory radio in it. I'm the second owner and the car is low-milage & all original, so I'm not going to put a new radio in it.

Anyway, the day I purchased the car I put a Men At Work tape in, and played that until it was over, then I took it out & flipped it, and it never played again. Appears that the driver wheels don't turn, because I can put an adapter cassette in (one that allows you to play a Ipod,etc through the headphone jack) and have it play fine, since there's not "tape" to scroll.

Anyway, any help will be appreciated, I just got a Ceephax Acid Crew tape & I'd love to play it in the car =P

Bypass the Tape Player and put in a line for an MP3 player. I will have to see if I can find the link for this.

Could be a drive belt in the unit. Unfortunately, it would probably cost about as much to fix as just replace the whole unit with a new one.

I had a similar problem. I bought an OEM Mazda cassette deck for my SA on eBay. Of course, it didn't work.

So I searched and found a local shop which repairs car radios, stereos, TV's, VCR's, etc. They got the deck to run by replacing a worn out rubber idler wheel. When the deck ran slow, they replaced the motor with a variable speed motor. I think the total cost was about $30 a few years ago.

My main point is that the parts are still available and there are still guys who can do this work. Since you're trying to keep the original radio and cassette deck working, you just have to find the right repair shop. Try your local yellow pages and Google. Look under repair for car radio, home stereo, TV's, etc.

Since you're trying to keep the car original, the only alternative is to find another OEM Mazda radio. But it may not work either.

If you want to buy a CD player for it the time being, and later on put the tape player back in it if you ever sale it, no one would really know it is not original unless they check around behind the tape player before they buy it. It is just a option.

I'd love to see a photo of your dash. A working stock tape player in an '83 is to die for. Shop around, the good used tape player is out there looking for a new home like yours.

Can you give me the contact info to this shop? I want to keep my OEM tape deck too.
