Odd Question about Pedal-Pumping Starts

Hey All,

So I'm reading through the forum today, and the oddest memory pops up.

As it seems to me, when the car was "running" many moons ago, sometimes mum would have to madly pump the pedal while turning it over to get it to start... So it'd turn and turn, almost catch, turn turn... Mum would pray (as is usual for her) I would coax the car with "come on little car... come on" ... and it'd start.

What could this be a sign of? Perhaps something related to my high-rev, start-only-on-choke problem? Or maybe just a sign of the old carb gumming up and going south? Or should I look into maybe fuel line system problems?

Slow starter maybe.

Slow starter, or battery draining down causing the starter to move slowly.

When i pump the pedal (even on my SE), i never floor it all the way, unless its almost catching. I finesse it right in the middle, to lower half of the range, i dont know, having a stuck injector just taught me that its way too easy to flood if you floor it. Same went with my last car (12a)..

For those who think pumping gas doesnt help on EFI, had you driven my car you would have been proved wrong.

Well... The starter's been replaced, and the battery too :) So let's hope that was just the problem.

Could it have been a fuel delivery problem? Clogged fuel filter perhaps? Becasue the starter didn't seem to *sound* slower.... but my memory of this is really... foggy

OK, well hard starting could be TONS of things, really:

1) Fuel delivery
2) Spark plugs
3) Spark Wires
4) Distributor cap and rotor
5) Spark plug wires
6) Ignitors
7) Your car's mood
8) Atmosphere (humidity, altitutde, your car's mood)
9) Your car's mood,

and well, it also really depends on how your car is feeling that day.

wierd. I barely touch the throttle on startup in my SE, and my old GLS would start with just the choke

ioTus 06-14-03 01:26 PM

When the car was running like it was supposed to, i wouldnt have to touch the clutch or the gas.

But sometimes when the stuck injector was working its wonders, it would do exactly as described in the top post. Then, i would have to coax it over with gas, sometimes it worked, sometiems it didnt.

Ah, but you see, mine's a GS, so stuck injectors are about as common problem to me as replacing the head gasket and having to get my cam shaft replaced ;)

ioTus 06-15-03 03:53 AM

Vipernicus, this was the case w/ my 85 gs, 12a carb, as well. ONly not as bad as teh gsl-se.

I was just trying to relate it to both worlds....
