O2/Wideband sensor location
 

I have looked, watched and googled all around and still can not find anything concrete to my question. Sorry if this has been answered.

Looking to put a wideband on my 83 Rx7. It has a stock 12A and would like to know more about what is happening when I am driving it.

It says to place the gauge at 24 inches from the port. I know that 24 inches from the port is too hot and will burn up the sensor. It says that the sensor can not extend past 900 F or it will burn up. It does say that there is a another part I can order called Innovate Motorsports p/n 3729 which seems to just extend the the O2 sensor out so it does not have direct contact with the heat.

Does anyone have experience with this on if I can get away with mounting it farther back without the extra parts or is it best to just get the extra parts and place them 24 inches from the port?

Unless you have a dual pipe exhaust setup like the RB SP, you would probably only use one sensor further back around mid chassis in the exhaust pipe (probably before any catalyst if there are any. If you have a dual pipe exhaust from front to back like the RB SB you can place them right before they join up to go into the muffler over the axle. Mine has bungs setup like this but I have had the $$/time to get a setup in place yet. You are correct that putting them too close can burn them up. I've heard of folks using those extenders but on a stock setup the exhaust exits are joined up pretty close to the rear iron so not much room to put both there.

I have duels down to the rear axle. I have ordered the extenders for the heat. They should get in today and I will place them at the end of the manifold. Should be done in a week or so. (If life agrees with that time line.)

Place them at the very end of the Racing Beat header. The runner closest to passenger foot well can mount about 15 degrees pointed inward, and the other runner about 10 degrees. You'll have to trim the heat shield a little but there is plenty of room for the wiring. Make sure you have a good power source and ground for the controller. Otherwise you can burn out the heater.

I'd put the header on, then hold the O2 sensors with the bungs in place and mark your center points. It'll make sense once you have a look.
