Not cranking over
 

My 1985 GS just took a dump on me, it is not cranking over. Today I bought some new pedels and put them on and now my rx will not crank over. I took the car around the block and the tach was bouncing around at idle, every time I pushed the brakes my stereo would turn off and my neons would dim. The batterie is good, the headlamps turn on but now are stuck in the up position, none of the electronics inside work any help would be greatly appreciated.

You have a short. . . could be caused by the neons or stereo

check the ground and if a fuse is blown

yesterday I bought a orbital gel cell batterie, cleaned the cables and the car still doesn't have anything electrical working inside, the headlamps work better then ever (still don't retract from the up position) but thats about it. Last week on my way home from work my car was acting really funny(not ha ha funny) and when I went to start it the tach was only reading up to 1,200, the over rev buzzer stayed on the entire drive home, and the thing stayed running after sitting for 13 hours with out the use of the choke which is real unusual as it would normally need to warm up for a few minites. Any one have any ideas on why the car doesn't crank and nothing in the interior works don't be scared to reply I don't bite.

It definitely sounds like a bad ground, blown fuse/fusible link, or a short somewhere.

Get the fusible links. They are on the inner strut tower on the drivers side (in engine bay). The smaller + battery wire runs to them. They look like a block with three wires looping out. One is for headlight, one is for the headlight retractors, one is for everything else.

What other electrical stuff have you done lately? You said this happened after changing the pedels. Did you do anthing electrical at the time or recently?

What all doesn't work? The tach is messed up, but do the cluster warning lights work? What about heater blower, interior lights, etc.? How about exterior lights (brake lights, parking lights, etc.)? What does the voltmeter read?

Check the output wire of the alt. Maybe it got caught in a belt and is shorting out. Check the grounds to the - battery cable. The battery cable should attach on the inner strut tower and on the engine just above the starter. Make sure they are tight and clean.

Let us know what you find out.

About two weeks ago my stereo went out and I had car toys re-install it the installer said that the thing was shorting out and he said he fix it, I don't know about trusting them, anyways I havent done anything to the electrical system in 6 months.

Things that don't work: Car won't start, headlamps won't flip down, none of the dome lights work, my neons don't work, stereo doesn't work, the gages do not light up. I haven't tried to see if the heater works most likely it won't. So basically every thing inside the car doesn't work and I now have a real big flashlight now insted of a sports car. :bigthumb:

I am going to check my grounds tonight after I get out of work and my fuseable links also.
