is it normal for my oil pressure to fluctuate?

when its at an idle the oil pressure is at about 10psi, during heavy acceleration it shoots up to about 75, then when im cruising at 60 it stays at 60psi. is this normal? i don't remember the 85 that i had ever doing this.

10 PSI at idle is a bit low, but seems normal otherwise. Are you reading this from an aftermarket gauge?

oil pressure is measured an 3k rpm. it will fluctuate up and down with rpm below 3k.

no that's on a factory gauge so of course its an estimation. i was just curious if its normal cuz i have an oil leak and i thought that might be why its fluctuating.

have you tried checking the connection at the sender? it could simply be loose or dirty, or both.

PercentSevenC 10-04-09 12:44 AM

Yeah, I wouldn't trust the factory gauge to tell me anything specific.

Normal operation. If your 85 didn't act the same way something was wrong with it or the oil level was too low.

i can't figure out where my engine is bleeding from. are there any really common places that 12as tend to leak from? mines leaking on the drivers side and it creates a small pool where the engine says 12a mazda. please tell me there's a chance its not coming from between the rotar housings.

If you have the beehive oil cooler, I would check the lines underneath the cooler. See if the connections are loose or corroded. Check to make sure the hoses don't need to be replaced. I am sure there are other things that could be leaking before you need to worry about the engine itself, but that is a good place to start.
