no power

I was hoping someone could help me with my latest problem. Car:85 gsl-se. Problem: no power over 4000 rpm. My guess would be cloged fuel filter or cat.

jeremy 12-22-02 07:16 PM

definitely a start. if you haven't changed the filter then you should anyway. cat should be easy to disconnect and take a drive (with earplugs) to see if its the culprit. after that. then come back with some answers and start from there.

MIKE-P-28 12-22-02 07:19 PM

good start, wont hurt to replace it, but I bet you 100% you got 5 and 6th ports not opening :)

rich367 12-22-02 07:25 PM

I don't think my neighbors would appreciate me driving around with an open exhaust. What would prevent the 5&6 ports from opening.

MIKE-P-28 12-22-02 07:46 PM

sticking binding linkage

Im not well versed in the 6 port design, someone better than I would be better at explaining it

jeremy 12-22-02 08:41 PM

after a while there can be a build up and they can stop working. not sure what actuates the se but on the s4 exhaust backpressure does. this shouldn't affect the upper rpm range however. screw your neighbors. its called a test. if they bitch then rev at them, lol. otherwise i don't know what to tell you.

specRX7_22 12-22-02 09:45 PM

ahh its only like 98 decibals.... they'll get over it. these cars sound great like that, music to my ears. dont wear ear plugs (jeremy)! lol jk

If I have some time on thursday I'll try removing the cats.

No, this will DIRECTLY affect the upper RPM Range. When the 5&6 ports are stuck in the closed position, the car just falls flat and stops pulling.

Go to the passenger side of the engine, and manually push the actuators open and closed (the rear one might be hard to get to with the emmissions crap in place). They should move freely and smoothly with a spongy feel.

If they do move freely, Start the car, pop the hood and walk over to the pasenger side. Grab the trottle and give it some quick throttle to make the engine rev in the 6k range. The actuators should move a little, even without load.

If they don't, look in your Haynes or shop manual, read up on it, and start tearing it apart to clean them out.

rich367 12-23-02 09:37 PM

Thanks for the info I'll try that tomorrow. How do I get a picture of my car in my signature.

rich367 12-29-02 07:01 PM

Ok, I removed the entire exhaust, cleaned the fuel pump strainer, and the 5&6 port actuators seem to be working ok. Still no power. It actually runs worse without the exhaust.

Very little back pressure.

rich367 12-29-02 07:28 PM

I planned to put the exhaust back on but I broke most of the studs. Now if I ever get it running like it should I'll have to buy a new RB exhaust.

C'mon some of you se guys help him, i havent a clue never had a SE, but sems they are similar to the FC i drive..

When s the last time you tuned it up? Plugs/wires,dizzy cap etc?

MIKE-P-28 12-29-02 07:30 PM

Oh on second thought , it might be the Tps sensor. Look at the haynes manual and see what it says to test the throttle position sensor..

Thank Zookeeper.

Would that cause lack of power over 3k and not under?

Thanks for the plug DF, but I have a similar problem with my SE intermittantly. Reduced power above 4.5k and adjusting TPS (for other reasons) didn't seem to help that. I'm almost certain my aux ports (5+6) aren't opening sometimes. That's the exact RPM range that they should begin to open. The rear actuator rod is clean and shiny where it seems to have been working in and out, while the front rod is kinda dirty/crappy looking - like it hasn't been working. I'll get around to testing it the next time I feel like Houdini - too much junk in the way. May have ta use the "jaws of life" to get at them. (Ha! Then I'd have a widebody!) I did try to open them by hand and the rear was easier than the front - but neither was what I'd call "easy to move" or "spongy" feeling - unless it's a brick sponge! Also, I tried revving the engine while watching the actuators - nada... nada damn thing.

Maxda manual sez "disconnect exhaust line to actuators, apply LOW air pressure (1.5~2psi) to actuator hose. Actuators should actuate and operate linkage. I really don't have a low pressure air source and I think 100psi might not be a good idea - boy howdy, that'd open them little suckers

One question for any SE types, though: What would happen if 5th & 6th ports were disconnected from the actuators and just wired open all the time? Anybody try it? Run too lean at low RPM? Just curious...

It would rune fine. It would feel great at high RPM and you'd lose torque at the lower RPMs. It's fine if you're gonna be about 4500 RPM all the time.

Although, to me it's a shame, a 6 port is known for it's nice flat torque curve.

Just remove them, clean them out, and clean out the tube that feeds the 6 ports (gets full of carbon). You might need to remove the intake to really clean everything (the sleeves) properly.

It might take a couple of hours, but it would be worth it.

People in the 2nd gen forum , run theirs like that, ask in there :)
