Is there any way to make the choke on our cars either fully automatic or fully maual? This half and half choke is annoying. I think i'd prefer fully manual myself. How can I defeat the auto off thing? TIA

I Like the semi auto one ... it desn't stick on when you don't want it to and refuse to come on when you do like an auto one does AND you have the added advantage that it releases itself when the engine is warm enough ... I mostly use mine manually anyway... just push it back in when you think its warmed up

JC Whitney sells a manual choke knob with a cable, but I haven't checked into how it would be mounted. It's pretty cheap though.

You could remove what is on there now, and take a trip
to the boneyard and get a choke assembly(cable,knob)
from an early honda (cvcc) or fab one from scratch.
that should be pretty easy. Me, I like how the choke works as it is now.

I like the choke the way it is. The RX-2 had a manual choke knob AND a manual throttle knob. Now *that* was fun.

Count me among those who like the choke the way it is. On my old RX4, the choke wouldn't hold it's position so I made a little choke holding shim out of a piece of an old plastic bank card cut to the length I wanted. That worked okay, but I like the self-holding feature better.

I like the way mine is already. Stays out and goes in automatically...though..I think it might be going out...sometimes it doesn't stay out all the way...I've got to pull on it hard.

It shouldn't be difficult to pull. If it is it's probably your choke return spring. Specifically, it's gettin rusty and needs some oil. Mine was doing that, and I sprayed some WD40 in it. Works like new again. I can't remember exactly where it is, but I believe it's one of the springs on top of the carb. Just follow the linkage, look for a spring and spray away.

Is there some sort of adjustment for the choke that affects quality of idle? Whe I use the choke on warm up, it runs a little rough, spitting & sputtering. After warm up with choke in, runs smooth. Pull choke out, idle goes up normally, but runs rough. Car uns smooth throughout all RPM's otherwise.
Not a big deal at all, just curious as to what that means.

Old feature is great. You can run power to the brown wire on the back side of the choke assembly. This will energize the magnet and your choke should hold the idle at any rpm. I am currently useing my choke as my stage rev limiter. Energize the choke assembly though a toggle switch, pull choke to desired rpm, now I know exactly what rpm I am launching at, one less thing to worry about at the line.

It's fairly easy to pull out...it's just a pull and it doesn't come out all the way or maybe it does and my car idles rough for some reason. Usually it'll sit at 2k rpm..then towards the end of the warm up the engine will rev up to about 3k.

On my car, the choke will run the car too rich at 2k rpm, thus the stuttering. Just adjust the knob back to about 1500 rpm, it'll run fine.

Not much to tell 'cept there were two knobs to play with in order to get the engine run'n.

I'd check for a kink in the cable housing. They seem to get a bend right where the cable enters the body of the choke mechanism inside the car.

Does anyone know of a replacement choke unit? The previous owner of my vehicle cut the choke cable from the back of the knob assembly. I'm not even sure if it auto-holds-and-releases anymore. If there isn't a replacement, could I splice a cable onto it or something?

If the previous owner cut the cable, you are going to have to find a replacement.
Now depending on where it is exactly cut you can just run a direct steel cord to the carb. but if were you I would replace the whole thing. Make things easier on you.
I know that someone in the first gen for sale section has one for sale unless it has found a new owner.
I just saw you own a REPU, not sure the difference between the '79 Rx7 and the repu but I hope this helps in anyway.

Thanks. After posting I found a few used assemblies on eBay. My only worry with the RX-7 one is that the cable might not be the right length. I suppose it's worth a shot though. I pulled apart the one I have and I don't see an easy way to attach a new steel cord. Pretty interesting design, I guess it relies on the actual choke spring to return and the electronic part simply holds the cable in place. I'll grab a new assembly on eBay and report back as to whether it fit.

After I saw that you owned a REPU so I added the cord adjustment part in.
In the engine bay the cord that runs from the choke to the carb is a direct connection. The only hard part would be finding or reusing the connections on both ends. Even so you might just be able to splice some where in the middle to add or remove a section to fit you needs until you find a better and more permanent solution.
