next fun project
After I get my oil cooler leak fixed this is the next fun filled repair I have to do.
yes the dreaded storage bin rust |
I'm curious...think this is something a body shop would be able to do? There's a body shop repair class that a friend is in. I just noticed last night rust in the back. I finally pulled up the carpeting, and there was enough to be somewhat worried. I don't know quite how I missed it...but I did, and it's my problem now.
But this body shop class doesn't charge labor...and I figure that's probably the majority of the expense on something like that. Something to think about anyhow. |
Thats the same thing that happened to me I did not know enough when I bought the car. I know now!
Its just something I am going to try and fix myself the rest of the car "seems" not to bad. Its not a daily driver so its not going to be on the road much |
I think that a good body shop could do It just a matter
of how much you want to spend the body shop class maybe a good idea |
you think THATS bad???
check this one out! http://hroman.slac.com/rx7/rust/3.jpg Yours shouldn't be too bad to fix...just make sure they get ALL of it out |

I've never seen anything that bad before that is nasty.
|
Mine was like that. i fixed it too. You can see it on my cardomain site.
|
i was luckey enough to find a car that has no rust in those areas.
my only rust is where the sunroof holds itself in (not a watertight car in the rain) |
is there a way to tell if you have bin rust except for taking out the bins and all?
|
nope...the ONLY way to be sure is to take out the bins...you could look outside but you won't be able to tell what might be eating up on the inside...
|
do you guys remember that video where the guy video taped his car while he was driving. You could see how that part of the car was shifting and stuff from the torque
|
junia, this might be the thread youre talking about.body flexing
|
I have an 81 car in my junk yard that was scrapped because of flex/rear trying to leave. The owner worked on the rot and welded in 1/2 plate steel, which lasted for 6 years. But in the end the rear was trying to pull out from under the car.
|
Well I have started to make some progress on my wheel
repair. I have decided to weld some new metal in. I cleaned it up some more and cut some metal plates for it. |
This is the new plate I cut for the inside
|
not bad, looks alot better. I wanna get mine fixed but i'm a welding newblett
|
I am going to take it to a guy down the street from
me get him to do the welding. You should be able to find a welding shop that can do it for you. Ask some friends you might find someone who has a welder |
I had the same problem (as many of us do). I ended up welding a piece to the outside rather than the inside. I would be concerned that you would get water into the tiny space between the edges of the hole and the piece you are welding in. I also sealed, primed and under-coated the crap out of it once finished. Of course, only time will tell if it works..
(sorry the picture quality is bad) |
Once I get the plate mounted on the inside. I am going to grind the rest of the rust out form the outside of the mount and then cover that and weld it in once that is done I will seal it It. Should last for a long time.
|
ahh.. that makes sense.. glad you thought it thru..
|
Thanks I am going Try and show my progress on the
forum. I am taking my time on this and would like to see If I can get it repaired for a good price buy doing most of the work myself |
I am slowly making progress on my storage bin rust.
Today I got most of the rust out and got it ground down to bare metal. The rot does not seem to have got into the suspension mount just the outside plate. I am going to talk to a welder and then get some replacement metal cut. At this point does anybody have any ideas or suggestions? |
when i was getting my other 7 estimated the metal shop was going to replace that plate with a thick piece of metal...then reinforce underneath...
