Newbie question

Hey folks, I'm totally clueless to Rotaries, and what options came with what. Maybe someone here can help me.
I came across a 79 RX-7 with low miles (65k) it needs a paint job and a driver seat. The previous (orginal) owner was a large individual (280+lbs) and the driver seat is hashed. The body is very straight, and the paint looks like hell (silver) but very little rust. Instrument cluster looks perfect, the carpet, headliner is perfect, passenger seat is nice. Here's the odd thing, the engine is a 13b, I called him and asked him if that's the engine that came with the car, he said yea. Did the 79 ever come with a 13b, or is this dude flubbin to me? It's a weber carburated motor FYI, any help in helping me decipher this car, would be appreciated.

No stock 13B's until 84-85... it couldn't have come with the car. Certainly a transplant. That's a good thing though, it's the motor you want anyways. There are various Weber carb kits available for the 13B, among them the 45DCOE, 48DCOE, and 48IDA. There are also kits with smaller dual Weber carbs, I'm not sure of the exact model. If you can post a pic people can help you identify.

My driver seat eventually wore out as well, I replaced it with a racing seat albeit not cheaply. It's hard to find original driver seats in good condition, but all the second generation RX-7 seats (86-91) will fit, so no big deal.

you are lucky. you take care of that engine. about the seat, you can find one in the junk jard

Hey thanks for the information, The Webercarb is a 4bbl, is that a good thing? (If we were talkin Mustangs, I'd say Uhhhh YES!) What kinda goodies can I get for it?Header? Exhaust? can I pull a mid 14 sec 1/4 mile at 4700ft altitude? Im gonna do some hunting, anyone want to point me in the right direction?

Felix Wankel 06-12-02 08:34 PM

Are you sure its a Weber if its a 4 bbl? It may be two smaller 2bbl ones.

Vooduguru 06-12-02 08:50 PM

I'll double check but I'm pretty sure its a 4bbl, Ill let ya know tomorrow

i bet your carb(s) say rotary enginerning on the top of the carbs and on the intake i have the same setup. It's pretty good but it idles pretty shitty. I would recommend you get a tune up , about $85, a oil change ,i run 10-40, and a chilton's shop manual. Don't buy a Haynes manual, they blow.

Go get a second gen seat. They are a little more comfortale and firm then the stock seats. I got two from a junkyard for 20 bucks...

Looks like a stock Nikki 4 bbl carb on a 13b ?

And that driver seat is toast! :(

Looks like you have a reciepe for potential sitting there. The most in-depth mod you could do has already been done. Looks to be a good buy, how much does he want for it?

i bet its a old 13b 4 port
from a pre 79 car
Can someone explain what that may mean? Im SUCH a newbie hehehe

jeremy 06-23-02 10:55 AM

rotaries where also in rx3's, rx4's, etc that were pre rx7. it could be a 13b out of one of these.

Maybe, but the Rotor Housings are definately 84+. The Old school 4-ports had the different "Mazda" logo. Although it could be a frankenstein'ed engine with mismatched parts.

If we could see better pics of the Exhaust side, and maybe the intake, it would help clarify.

My money is on a newer engine though.

Carb? - Could be a Hitachi from the old school engines though..

thats a 12a the car looks all org. to me it would be a great little project car if the price is right

If anyone wants to give me 1000 for it (it DOES need a clutch) I'll let it go. email me

zoro 07-02-02 09:39 PM

I know nothing about rx7s but

I supicious of the condition of the car for 65k on it. It just doesn't look right. And to have a 84 13B would mean that the original motor had been replaced. Correct? So I would lay odds that this car has rolled over at least once.
What you guys think?
Of course having just completed the shopping process for a extremely clean 65K 83 I could just be extremely paranoid.:D

Vooduguru 07-04-02 01:00 AM

I think 1k though is a fair price for the car, it runs great, it just needs a clutch and a driver seat.

Hey, do you live near Coral Reef, Or Eureka? That area looks real familiar. I grew up in the redlands (west of Krome Ave)

Mine idle perfect, it took some work though. I'd bet you're running massively rich on the primary adjustment.
