Newbie here

I just bought a 1984 Rx-7 and the guy I bought it off of said it's a 13b engine but it has a carborator ( I know I misspelled that ) .. I want to completely redo everything to the car and I was wondering if anyone could give me and advice as far as what I should do first I would like to see if I could put a 3rd gen. engine into it and what it would take to do that .. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated ..

Well, to start with, you can lift the hood and look at the block on the driver side and see if it says "12A" or "13B". It's pretty easy to spot.

If it's a 13B you're pretty close to a 3rd gen, all you need is the turbo.

Have you ever changed or modified an engine before?

ok I wasn't sure I have been reading this forum for about 3 weeks now and was confused cause I know everything I have read said the carb. came with a 12a engine but he said it was a 13 but I'll make sure and as far as me changing or modifying an engine I have never done it this is a project car just to see what I can do by myself .. The guy I bought it from said it has around 240.000 miles on it and still enough power to catch 3rd gear but I don't know .. seems a little much to me .. but I've never owned or driven a rotary before ..

the guy might have converted his fuel injected 13b to carb.....some people do that.....check out the block and see if it says 13b or 12a

The block will say 13b or 12a on it to the right of teh oil filler neck. As Mr Big G stated, some people just hate FI and convert teh car to a carbed setup.

If the motor has a big blue air cleaner that says Mazda Rotary Engine, then you have a 12A. If not, he has a custom carb and you have to check the numbers on the housing.

Just for the record, it's 'carburetor'. Just call it a 'carb', though. Fewer letters to mistipe. :D

RE-EGI is lettered right on top of the 13B fuel injected engine. The lettering is on the rectangular-shaped intake manifold.

BZZZZZZ... My 82 had a 4 port 13b in it when I bought it. It had the stock air cleaner on it for a nikki. It has a cold air intake on it now.... I got rid of that big blue monstrosity.

Well went and looked at it today it's a 12A engine .. considering it's been sitting outside for the past 2 years in the weather it's in great shape the paint is faded but not bad and the interior is great I couldn't get the ignition to turn I think something may be messed up on the inside not sure though but it's going to look great when I start working on it .. How hard would it be to drop a 13B into it ?

Well,...When you say FD engine a assume it will be turbocharged. You need to use the search function at the top of the forum. It will find much more info then this thread will. A FD engine is expensive compared to a S4 or S5 TII engine which will be the most practical. Read the entire sticky at the top of the 1st gen section on "Putting a 13bt engine in a GSL-SE". THis will explain much!! Also, you want a good base to start from, if there is alot of rust, or tweaked subbody, you may want another car to begin with. FB's are cheap. THis is not an easy or cheap project by no means. However much of the expense is building what you want. It can cost from 3k to 10k. It really is what you are looking for as far as power goes.

Good luck and keep doing research:)

Thanks for the advice I'm going to keep looking and see what I can do with this one also .. it's a really nice car for what I'm paying for it in my opinion he only wants 500 for it it's got 209.000 miles on it

jimmyrose99 10-22-03 02:52 AM

i thought only the gsl-se was EFI, some 13b's have carbs dont they?

Manntis 10-22-03 02:43 PM

the GSL-SE was the only 1st gen that came with a 13B, therefore any unmodified 1st gen with a 13B will be fuel injected.
