Hi everyone. My names Greg and Im from Birmingham, AL. Ive been into RX-7's and rotaries for several years now, but am just now joining the forum. I have a couple of friends on the forum already (BoostedRotors and FEARED7), and thought I would sign up. A few months ago, I bought an 84 GSL-SE with around 160k on it for a cool 900 bucks. The paint isnt all that great, but the interior and drivetrain are in excellent shape. For now, I plan on making it a stiff little street car, and olso seeing how much power I can suck out of the NA 13B before it goes. I plan on doing a TII swap eventually, but time will tell on that one...anyway, heres a few pics:

looks good,,,,may want to try some some auto paint finish restorer and alot of hard rubbing in a small spot to see whats under the oxidation,,if that dont work, rub it down with some atf, makes the paint look new for a couple of weeks,,,,congrats on your find...

I believe all thats under there is more oxidation and then metal :) hes scrubbed the hell out of that thing and it hasnt helped any. itll be getting new paint sometime in the not too far off future. ATF really work?

atf will make the paint look like new, but you will have to get as much off as u can after applying it, just think of the dust that will stick to it, but it does make the water bead up and looks good till after about 3 washings, one way i found out about rubbing the crap out of it was when i brushed on a thin coat of acrilic floor sealer (semi-gloss) on a small section and then used car paint restorer to remove it, man u would not believe how the shine came thru...but about an hour of rubbing per section.......still laid off so cant afford a real paint job,,,got lots of time to mess with stuff......

Nice car. you should try polishing it with Zymol. That stuff works wonders. My car was oxidized way worse than yours and look at it now. try it, you'll be surprised. Later

where can one get there hands on this Zymol? Your car looks great, no way it was worse than Greg's car !?

I swear it was worse than his car!!!! I kick myself all the time for not taking any before shots of the car. But it was definatly worse. It was so bad if I ran my hand over it (just barley even touching) my palm would turn reddish cause of all the crappy paint. It took, about 5 hours of *HARD* polishing to get it like that. Oh boy I'm not sure if it could take it again, the paint is pretty thin, went through in a few spots (oops). My Brother introduced me to Zymol when he sold me the Trans Am. You can get it just about anywhere, NAPA, Wal-Mart, etc. Make sure you use a good, high speed, buffer when you do it. My friend tried it on his 85 with some POS wal mart buffer and it didn't do shit. Get yourself some Zymol and spend a few hours, you'll be glad you did. Zymol is awesome. Peace

Oh yea, thanks for the compliments dude! :) Everyone is always amazed when I tell them that it's original paint and has never been garaged, EVER!!! It's in crazy good shape. Does have a few spots 'o rust on it that will be taken care of soon. Later

I think these pics may be a little decieving, it looks a lot more oxidized in person. There is absolutely NO clearcoat left. Was yours THAT bad 82 TransAm? I don't want to waste 5 hours of buffing! :)

2. Carbon Lock Fix
3. Power Steering Fluid Exchange
4. Auto Tranny Fluid (intended use)
5. Jim Beam and a twist of lime (great for hang overs)

I tried it today based on this recommendation, it was not what it was hyped to be. Many other products will yield similar results if your paint happens to respond well to it. I did a little side by side comparison between the Zymol and some Color Back (turtlewax). There wasn't a major difference between them. The Color Back seemed to dig into the paint easier though.

Shit, that car ran like new. It was major fun to drive, especially in the rain :D


(But buying it for $800 and selling it for $1400 eases the pain of it being gone)...

I bought an 88 GXL for 700 and sold it for twice that...so I know the feeling! :)

Actually, I used Turtle Wax Color Back. The Zymol was too expensive.
