New member with problems getting my 84 RX-7 to start sometimes, any help is great.
 

Sometime when I go to start my car it will work fine, then others I get no power at all, then I wait a few mins then try again and it will work. Any help would be great.

Anyone have any ideas?

Your profile says that you have an '84. We need more information than that. Is it carbed or FI etc...

are you saying when you turn the key nothing happens. We need input!!!! Oh by the way welcome to the forum. I hope you read the rules about the probationary period. it states that any newbie asking for diagnosis within the first 90 days must pay the person who diagnoses his/her problem at a reasonable rate.

Check the fusible link under the steering wheel column.
It might have a break in it and sometimes makes contact and other times it don't.

Cheap fix, if it is the sourse of the problem.

Its carbed and I mean when I turn the key it does nothing at all, then a few mins later I will have power and it will start.

I did, and also put new top post terminals on it and it didn't make any differance.

Check the connections at the other end of the cables.

I can tell you right now that the most likely thing is going to be a loose connection on the starter. Follow it back from the battery. If its not, then check to make sure that the ground hasnt wiggled itself broken and corroded on the same side "starter side" Should be on the starter bolt near the bottom of the transmission, have a look at that. Maybe give it a shake. If its loose at all, then thats a good idacation of a problem.

Dont go under the dash quite yet. Go for the simpled stuff first. :D

you can always grab a voltmeter and have a look at many volts your getting at the end of your bat wire that leads to the starter, should be atleast 14 +/- 1 V

The positive cable is aluminum, they tend corrode inside the covering. I have even cut them back to where there was no corrosion and still couldn't get full current through, ended up replacing both cables.

If the the starter clicks, but won't spin, it's the starter solinoid. If no click, it's in the cables or the ignition wire on the starter.

It don't click, it must be the cable on the starter, I have not got it on the lift yet, but I will check that. It was sitting for 4 years before I got it fixed. And some good news I just bought a 85 GSL.
