new idea for 1st gen front speakers
 

i know, i know.... it's audio. but a lot of us don't go in there too often, and it IS about 1st gens....
anyway, tweeters in the air vents seems like a good, solid idea. but the mids end up by your feet or in the bottom of the door. i was thinking... has anyone tried to make a door pod for the UPPER part of the door? the most forward part? that'd put the mid right next to the air vent mounted tweet, closer to ear level, and with less obstructions for the sound. any thoughts on this?

I've always read that you want to keep the mids as far away from your ears as you can for imaging, since you don't sit in the center of the car.

WHY? Theres a hole already in the upper portion of the sheet metal in the door. You aint gotta cut jack shit. Just measure the back of the door panel, and peel away the cardboard stuff, leaving just the material on the panel for the music to play through unless you got the all leather?/vinyl option...

By the way I always heard the opposite, you wanna try to keep the mids close to the tweeters, with the tweeters on axis with the listener :)

Think about it for a second. If you put the speakers at the top half of the door, you'll end up with them closer to the tweeters if you go the silly vent route. That's good. But now, you also have the driver's side speaker closer to your ears than if it was at the bottom of the door. Any audiophile knows what that means. The only way around that problem is a Sony DSP EQ that can "stall" the signal going to that speaker alone. As a caveat, there is one serious thing to be considered when installing a pod at the bottom like I did, that I had not considered before I started cutting....

I started with 4" speakers at the front part of that pod. I moved up to 5 1/2"s then finally the current 6 1/4"s. Each time I nibbled away a little more metal since the magnets were going deeper into the door each time. The pods were made so that once the door was closed, the speaker would not be blocked significantly by legs. Because I got greedy for the bigger speakers, I actually had to cut bracing metal that is in the vicinity of the front of the door that is for...wala...the hinges! It actually strengthens the sheet metal for the front panel of the door where the hinges bolt on. The doors sag only a little now, but it is irritating, especially when I know there is no easy fix.:cool:

Yeah forgot to add that I have a Pioneer DEQ9200 DSP :) And mar I know exactly what you mean by the holes in the metal. With the panel off where you have to cut the hole for the magnet is right in the middle of where the brace is welded in the door. I beleive its got like 4 welds on the front, and when you cut for the magnet you cut through 2 of them :( I just used some 1/2" pan-head screws and it seemed to work... Well was on my 80 and thats was a LONG time ago :)

Why did I not think of that? Damn, that is the easy solution. Here I am thinking of welding panels and crap...thanks, Mike!!:D
