New To The Game!
Hi ,
We are members of a Michigan based car club called Unique Illusions (www.teamui.com) We just purchased a team project car: 1981 Mazda Rx-7 the body (new paint job) and the interior are immaculate. The engine is either blown or some other issues. We are looking for the all the information, advice, tips, and etc. we can get for this vechile. It has the carbed engine in it, 5 speed manual transmission. We are wondering were we can find a gently used or rebulit engine , what sizes would bolt up to the stock motor mounts and etc. also what is possible to do to the stock carbed engine if we decide to go with it. it has the removable sun/moon roof. body wise, we want basically a lip kit so we can keep it some what orginal. who makes a lip kit and spoiler for it ? exhaust wise we want a deep thoarty but ricey sound to it , what would you recommend ? tailights , who makes aftermarket ones or can you clear them ? headlights are popup's so basically can you do a conversion , where can we find it and for what car? otherwise we will leave alone, what is the bolt pattern for the rims ? aftermarket hoods? interior wise: short throw shift kit , who makes it ? seats? harnesses? harness bar? aftermarket bezzel and gauges? dash trim kits? anything else interior wise that should be a need? engine wise: we plan to run a msd ingition . who makes a CAI ? we plan to stay N/A . what can we do engine wise if we stay carbed? we want alittle performance to be able it lay it down at the drag strip, we dont street race! RASR members. we plan to get the engine pieces dipped in chrome. what is possible engine wise? what all companies make products, accessories and etc. for this car? we dont want any rice on this vechile so no APC or anything else. We just need info and advice so we know what is possible , any how to's .pics, etc. we are going for a show/ alittle bit of power to lay it down platform. sorry for the long post but any info is greatly appericated! Thanks, Team UI |

Since the engine is carbed probably 4x100 if my facts are right. |
cool, the ladie said it wont start, cause it sat along a while, do you think it could be carbon locked? she said it seems to be like seized up!
|
Well, first of all, let's make this clear:
You do know what kind of motor is in it, right? Second, I can do the tails for you, for a small fee. Contact me on AIM, because it's easier there. I can help you out with this. Barryclipsnbravo Peace |

Just be forewarned, it will smoke like crazy for a while, once it does start (assuming this is the problem). Partly due to the carbon lock treatment, and partly due to sitting for so long. If it does not clear up after an hour or so of run time, a rebuild may be needed. I have seen a few that took a couple hours of running to completely stop smoking, after they had been sitting for a while, but they were boardline on needing rebuilt prior to the long storage. |

That's the FAQ page. Several bullets down is the de-carbonizing thread. A couple up from that lists possible performance mods. https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showthread.php?t=369520 Aftermarket gauge cluster face currently in production. |
One thing to mention about the possibility of carbon lock. Some threads recommend the use of ATF, but a lot of forum members say that MMO is the way to go. If I were in your shoes, I would try to find some "Powerfoam", I think you can get it at Napa but I'm not sure. Just shoot it down the carb and into the spark plug holes and let it sit for a few days. I've heard that this works well.
If you need additional help, let me know. I'm in GR, so not too far away and have been known to work for Heinekens...:) |
for the exhaust, id go with www.sdjmotorsports.com

We appericate alll the help guys, keep the info flowing, I think its the 12 a , considering it is carbed and has the blue air filter housing , I will double check it for you guys!
|
Yeah, that'll be a 12a. It should have it labeled right on top where it's easy to see.
For raw power, I'd look to the Racing Beat exhaust system first. Next, contact Sterling and he'll take care of your carb for you. Everything else is mostly little stuff, made up from junkyard parts (efans, 2nd gen direct fire ignition, etc.). But those first two items will be the biggest horsepower gain you could hope for (except for a port job, maybe). Anyway, you came to the right place. With the amount of experience some of these members have, they'll have your 7 screaming in no time! :) |
One more thing... Emissions removal. Nearly free and greatly simplifies matters down the road. Check out the FAQ, and look for "rat's nest removal". That would be a good place to start.
|
emissions like removing the cat convertor and MAF screen or what ? I dunno if I want it because if it isnt carbon locked then its a waste of our money because we bought a car that dont run for 800 and turn around have to buy a engine. we are debating but we are making payments until its Paid in full and I am currently planning out the vechile, I am good friends with Todd from GZDmotorsports otherwise known as 7speed

Have you tried starting it yet?
Do a full tuneup, then try starting it. NGK plugs, plug wires, battery cables, air filter, oil, fuel filter, clean the gas tank if you can, put new 85 octane gas. After that, just try starting it! If it doesn't start, come back and tell us what sounds it was making, if it wasn't turning over, etc. We'll get you started from there. |
Um, there's no MAF on carbed motors, as far as I know.
Emissions removal is removing that MESS of wires and tubes you see on top of the motor, as well as the air pump (Smog Pump to the rest of you) and other little things like that. |
cool I see ! well I am glad you guys are here to help me with getting this project off the ground and get it running, I hope to be running around 300 hp but I am not 100% sure yet.
|
To get 300hp you will have to have a big budget and make major modifications.
Upgrading the exhaust and removing the anti pollution system will give you around 125hp, which is all you have been taking about. Upgrading the carb, for example modified Nikki,or a Webber, cost range $350-800, will achieve some 150hp. The next stage to get performance is porting. This will require the engine to be stripped down and most likely new seals and springs. The cost depends on how much work you do your self as most is labor rather than parts. A rotary shop would be looking at in the order of $2000. With a big street port you will be getting around 200hp. Lots of noise and fuel consumption! The only way you will get 300 hp is adding a turbo charger to a good condition engine, possibly ported with a to4 level turbo. With this level of power you will need other upgrades-- clutch, fuel system, brakes, suspension etc. At this level most of the cost will be parts, so doing everything yourself only gives you a slight reduction in your required budget. You never get back the money you spend, so I suggest you seriously look at why you are undertaking the project, and the cash you have available to come to a realistic target. |
Turbo upgrade will be around $2000 with used parts, and doing it yourself. With an unknown condition motor, tack on another 2000 for a rebuild and port job. The 12a tranny will hold for awhile, but it'll die eventually. Turbo II tranny is about 350 used. If you have a beehive oil cooler, then make sure to upgrade to the front mounted cooler used from 79 to 82.

Exactly what type of racing are you looking to do? Drag, road course, autoX, etc...
