new apex seals? porting question
i want to half-bridgeport my 12a motor...my question is...can i do this without purchasing new apex seals? i think that stock seals are 3 piece...and that i need 2 piece seals to half bridge. im on a very tight budget. if i cant half-bridge...can i still streetport?
|
sure you can. but why use "used parts" on a long term project that will be prone to fail down the line quick than you thin it will
|
because im fuckin broke :D
|
the only things i plan on NOT replacing is the apex seals...
|
I may be wrong, but isn't that one of the key things that you would replace in a rebuild....I mean isn't a basic rebuild replacing just the apex seals?!?!?!?
|
yeah...it is....but only if you have $300 to replace them
|
yes but is not spending 300 dollars worth bad compression?
|
Postpone it 'til you can afford them. Otherwise, sounds like boning some slut from the bar at 2 am and saving your money for gas home rather than condoms, always play safe.

Hit That Shit Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!

How many of you have built motors? Measure the seals, if they are within factory specs, feel free to use them. 12A seals are two piece, put the corner on the opposite side as the bridge - obviously.

im going to visually look at/measure the seals...the motor had low miles (50k) and was running in excellent condition before being pulled to put in a v8 :( (all the better for me :)) |
If everything specs out, their is no reason to buy new anything except springs, cant go wrong with new springs!
You should have 2 peice seals. Stock is usually 2 |

Nimrod is right. One of the good things about a half-bridge is you can use the stock seals without any problems. Simply install the seals so the corner pieces are facing the centre plate on both the rotors. That way you can go as big as you want on the bridge-ports. Problem solved. |
I've never seen a 12A with 3 piece apex's and if the seals are in good condition they can be reused but you can get a set of apexes for less than $200 if you just look around. I'm currently using a set of Atkins seals in mine and they are holding up just fine.

yeah definitly do new apex seals, no reason cutting corners when you've gone that far. Although you guys do know that mazda reuses apex seals if they are in spec in their remans...thats something to think about ;)
and yes you could streetport with old seals with no worries I may be wrong, but isn't that one of the key things that you would replace in a rebuild....I mean isn't a basic rebuild replacing just the apex seals?!?!?!? |
Mazda used to make a machine just for re-machineing apex seals, if they lost their rounded tip, but their height was still in spec they could be machined...
I have piles of Apex seals that are well withen the high side of spec... SO i hang onto them just incase. when I re-use them down the road, I'll prolly use them with new apex seal springs, and new triangular portion of the apex seal. |
