Needs a tweak
 

Hello,
My RX has a stalling problem.
I have an '82 RX that has sat for many years. I've got it running and have done some maintenance and repair. It has new ignition rotor, cap, wires, and plugs. I've replaced both fuel filters and many fuel lines. I've also run BG fuel cleaner in tank and BG air cleaner in through one of the vac lines. Car also has new air filter and no catalytic. I think that covers all I know, fuel pump also works.
I had thought my carb could need to be rebuilt or could my fuel pump work sporadically? I also had considered possible crap in the gas lines but I don't know if that is possible with new filters.

I'm in a little over my head and would appreciate any insight or suggestions.

How is it stalling and when? What rpms? Is it temperature sensitive? These can give you a lot of clues.

Mine used to stall when Id floor it at low rpms, because the carb was not properly tuned. Also that was a Holley with a stock exhaust manifold, which is not a great combo.

If you still have the Nikki on there Id search this forum for a 'how to tune a Nikki' thread (there has to be one somewhere) because I never messed with mine, and it looks more complex than a Holley.

If that doesnt work let us know :)

Forgot to mention

because it has no cats make sure that there arent any opened vac lines from the removal. I found this to make a difference of night and day when I removed certain lines. Removing the rats nest entirely , was a noticable difference.

It doesnt take much, even just a bit too much air can make it stall.

I was doing something to it (cant remember now) exhaust work I think.. but the engine would stall and stall and stall... finally I got it up to about 6000 rpms at WOT then it came to life. and when I hit the brakes it was like standing on a brickwall. I had forgotten to connect the brake booster to the intake manifold (oops) haha glad no one was crossing the street! I connected it and its been just fine ever since.

I've found that it stalls out or even sometimes dies when coasting in neutral, also around 3-4 thousand RPM's it will begin to bog. Sometimes you can put in neutral for 30 sec or so and it will go again, other times it dies and you need to let it sit about 30 sec before it will start and go again. It seems pretty damn random, although it is almost every time I open the throttle up the hill near my home. Doesn't seem to be a temp issue as I let the auto warm-up with the choke do it's thing every time I start it. I can also let it idle for 2-3 hours and it won't sputter or die. Thanks for the vac tip. I'll check that out.

I know autos have a little different vac hoses and routings.. You may have to plug a vac line if one is open.. To me that almost sounds like results of too much fuel. Can you tell if its lean or rich?

If not, if your standing with the hood open, and you go WOT from idle and it stalls, its probally too lean. If it stalls and your eyes are watering its definately too rich.

Id just find a vac diagram, and go over everything. especially one for the cat removal. You might as well take off the air pump since the cat is gone...

Failing that Id check the wiring to and from the fuel pump, hell even the fuse
