Need opinion on best 1st gen to get
 

Well I decided that I want to get a full time track car. I have driven my 3rd gen on the track many times but want something I can fully strip down and race in SCCA. So the question is what would be the best car to get.

I was thinking an 83-85 GSL w/no sunroof/moonroof. This way get the most stable w/LSD and disc brakes. What is the S model? Sorry I am new to 1st gens?

Should I look for a completely modified SCCA ITA car or start with a basic car and build one up? If I start with a complete built one I would get more track time with the car but much more $$$ up front.

The S model means (base) no frills,no thrills,no LSD,no rear disks,
Maybe an early model 79,80,for raceing,,but like an 85 GSL-SE
the brakes,etc are more beefy VS the rest,,something to think
about,when a roll cage is installed sunroof won't matter much
as to body stiffness,to save weight,replace glass with lexon..

Buy an 84-85 S model (base) RX7. strip the bastard. Buy a GSL-SE

You'll want the drivetrain from the SE in the S. Engine-trans-rear end. Take the front strut assembly off the SE (brakes included) Place on the S

That was general your going to have a few trades here. a local RX tuner can advise further but just so you don't go in blind.
Class designations will make up your mind concerning engine tune & susp set up. Aside from the above just recall all you've done is transfer the good parts of the SE over to a lighter pan. Personally I would keep the budget for such a project under 6500. Esp if this is your first time owning a "track" car. If you've driven an SE for a extended period of time you may consider having one for street and one for track. they are too much fun. lates

The 84/85 GSL-SE was the best 1st gen ever made. Bigger engine, bigger brakes, easier to find rims for (and bigger stock rims too).

No question about it. The SE is the best.

Defiantly find out what the regulations are for the series you plan to race. In the SCCA Spec RX7 series you can only run a 12a engine.

What series is it that you plan to run?

And when you get sick of being beaten down by newer and larger vehicles with 17+ years of technology on you, it will be easier to upgrade to a 13B turbo engine with a GSL-SE. :D
