NEED HELP FASY !! 12a starter
 

OK that's my situation, my 12 starter is dead, I buy a new one, 5mins later the old starter is gone, now I but the new one in his hole ... but I forgot to look where the + and the- of the battery were on the solenoid, and where the tressed metal goes ?? I've tried sooo many configuration and nothing seems to work.

anyone could help ??? i have this picture from internet, identical installation , but i dont see which one is what and neither about the tressed.

PS : if it still doesent work (old starter was working before remplacing with the new one and the new was tested) what could be fautly ? and is there anyway to bypass the ignition so i can start for monday ? thx

There isn't any negative cable that would go to the starter solenoid. The negative might go on the other side of the starter bolt to be used as a ground, but not on the starter solenoid. Only the positive cable should go to the starter solenoid and the small trigger wire.

under any of the 2 bolts or a specific one ?? .. ive been trying to start with the ground mounted on the solenoid(before seeing your answer) and it only does "tic tic" and smoke was coming from the wire lol si I guess you're right, thx again fort the futur answer !


btw i checked the main fuse and she is ok

the positive cable goes to the bolt closer to the trans tunnel (left side looking at your pic). The other one has a wire coming out from the starter to the bolt. Leave that one alone. Good luck

But don't forget to ground the negative cable to the chassis and engine/ trans or the positive cable will fry.

thx now the car is starting but since its been a while since it didnt started i gave too much gaz lol .. another problem ! but now its starting, thx

so now everything is fine EXCEPT the oil pressure is not working anymore (must have cut a wire somwhere) ... but also the flashers arent working anymore ? is there a relay for flashers or fuses ?? and ALSO ... the tach stopped working too .. damn i need help with this car ! probably something fried from the misscontact when i had my starter connection wrong.

check your fusible links

ive already looked at them and they are OK

You've gotta test them in situ with a voltmeter or pull them out and test with an ohmmeter.

ive pulled them and looked at the wire to see if it was burned or corroded, but nevermind ive already redone the "main" , i will be doing the 2 other

you need to get a factory service manual. (FSM)
check and see for a loose yellow and green wire that goes to the negative post of the coil for your tach signal.

check all your fuses under the dash too

I have a brown /yellow striped wire for my oil pressure guage hooked up with a sliding clip that fits on the op sending unit under the oil filter. Take a look for that to see if your wire fell off.

Or simpler swap in the standard 2nd gen fuses and be rid of the fusible links once and for all...do a search on this

Simpler? It only takes a minute to pull a link and test it. Less to test it in situ with a voltmeter. What's 'simpler' about doing all that rewiring?

i just replaced my starter last week and all thats hooked to it is the power wire and the small trigger wire to the solenoid.

all seems ok but still no tach and no oil pressure i guess the resistance in them may have burned with my shortcut .. and still no flashers :(

No rewiring necessary. they plug straight into the housing that the fusable links go into.

When my fusable links are clearly burnt when they are...no guessing.

Sounds like you cooked something in the wiring harness...you did not state if all your fuses are good. If so but your still missing meters I would start looking for a melted connection somewere....any special places the smoke came from?

I just did my starter 2 hours ago...the hardest part was the jacking up the car.

fuses links and incar fuses are all ok , the smoke only came from battery cable but the car wiring is old and wire are dry and easy to break so im pretty sure i could search for week to find the problem .. and for my starter i jacked up the car on ramp, way easier.
