need help again, please respond
 

okay so this weekend, I'm going and getting the 85 rear-end for my 83, so I'll have posi-traction, and discs all around, because I was told that my rear-end is dead, I was driving the car last night, and the actual ride of the car is really solid, it doesn't feel like rear-end problems, more like I have something rubbing inside the drum brakes in the back.. I'd rather just replace some brake stuff then a whole rear-end even though an empty wet parking lot, my Rx-7 and a posi-traction rear-end does sound like alot of fun.
anyways could someone please help me, or at least tell me what I could look/listen for. I had a guy with a first gen listen to it, and a couple other guys, even jef card (former moderator of the forum, I think)
anyways, there anwsers were bouncing around, some were saying bearings, some were saying brakes, other were saying rear-ends, I would like to know what I have to look for, so I can at least get it running again, I'd rather have it running now, then not, because after the posi-rear goes in, I still have to wait for the next paycheck, for new brakes, and fluid, and all that stuff...

Why don't you tear into it and see if there is anything wrong with the brakes or bearings? Seems to me the prudent way to go. Find out what is wrong with it before you start buying parts. The rear drum brakes on the first gen wore out incredibly fast. That along with the clutch and waterpump were high mortality rate items.

I don't tear into becauase 1) I have no clue what I'm looking for and 2) I wouldn't know how to put it all back together.
so if someone could tell me what I have to look for.
it makes kind of a griding sound when just driving but very soft, but when I turn it makes like a clicking sound, (it mostly happens when I turn right. and the sound definately seems like it's coming from the right side of the car.

oh ya' my brakes are definately shot too.

Is the rear end leaking? Look at the drums for signs of fluid. May be a bit load because it's got no lube. HAve you checked it?

You do realize the brakes will need to come off when you change the rear end out.

I'd also check the brakes as hanman stated, if the brakes fail on ya, you really won't need that rear-end. Plus a set of brake pads is a shit-load cheaper than a rear end.

Get a Haynes manual and also a shop (factory) manual. Go through it step by step. Do one brake at a time, use the other as a guide (template) on how it goes back together. Check the brake shoes for wear (how thick they are)if they are worn down to metal it's a dead giveaway.
Ask for help here when needed.
