need to find fule pump relay

does anyone know where the fuel pump relay is in an 84 12a? for some reason my fuel pump isnt getting power

cdrad51 01-03-05 01:13 AM

right of the steering column.

dbragg 01-03-05 12:35 PM

under the dash or what?

slashdawg00110 01-03-05 12:44 PM

Going for the obvious, have you looked at the connection under the driver's side storage bin? That's where the connector is for the fuel pump. I wasn't aware that there was a relay for the pump on the 12A cars, but now I see a fuel pump cur relay in the 85 manual. Right where cdrad51 says it is. :D

diabolical1 01-03-05 12:44 PM

yes, under the dash :)

there is picture of it someone on this board. just run a search on fuel pump relay and you should be able to find if you want to see what it looks like.

im not too sure what that is where it shows the permanent jumper wire

numan2 01-04-05 11:04 AM

that should be to bypass the relay

cdrad51 01-04-05 11:43 AM

Yeah, that jumper wire and eliminating the relay, bypasses it altogether. Alternatively, like I did, you can install a switch there. Comes handy as anti-theft device, flood engine handling, etc.

dbragg 01-05-05 10:12 AM

i have found the fule pump relay and used a wire to bypass it. thanks so much for all the help. it saved me so much time and trouble. it would have taken me to much time to find the relay. thanks to everyone for their contribution.

You're welcome.

stupid question but.. why would mazda have engineered the car with the fuel pump relay? Whats its use?

Hades12 03-19-06 07:09 PM

The relay is wired to the T ignitor so it only runs when the ignitor is firing, to help prevent flooding.

drunkclever 03-19-06 07:39 PM

thanks,

Is there a way to test the relay using an ohm meter?

drunkclever 05-07-06 11:36 AM

Is the location of the "evil fuel relay" all the same from year to year? Is there one on a '82?

hmmm the fuel pump in my car runs whenever the key is turned to "on". Does this mean that the relay has been bypassed on my car?

drunkclever 05-07-06 12:18 PM

I pulled a black box that was above the clutch pedal, The car still turned on.. I wonder if I need to put it back. I looked around with a flashlight and couldn;t find anything that resembled a black box. or for that matter any connector that had 6 connectors except for the one I mentioned.

Hades12 05-07-06 01:32 PM

The realy is on 84 and 85 cars, May be on 83's but I dont remember.

cdrad51 05-07-06 02:23 PM

Yeah I think it's only for S3's, i.e. 84-85.

who said anything about a black box?

dantheman 05-07-06 09:35 PM

There isn't a reason to have a relay on that. If you just jump it over like that, it will work fine.

The fuel pump cuts on and off with the car now. Same as it did with the relay. . .

drunkclever 05-07-06 10:22 PM

well I removed some black box from above the clutch pedal that had six connector on it. I ahve a '82 gsl. My car starts with the stroke of the key now. I thought that it was because I had something wrong with my ignition, emmission or carb set up. I thought it was the accelerator pump still. thats why I am asking. I wish I had a digital camera to take a pic. Its about 2.5" sq. Well the car starts better than my friends '79 thats got a rebuildt engine. I had to pump the gas pedal afew times before, not I just turn key it. Even when its a cold morning.. just turn key  I didn;t have to add a jumper to it. I wonder what it does if its got nothing to do with the fuel pump. If anyone can sheds some light on this black box thingy

cdrad51 05-07-06 11:17 PM

Your profile says 1985. Please update.

Let's see a pic of this box. Borrow a camera.
