Brandon,
I sure hope that is 4700 pesos.:)
The cost is way out of line.
What type of porting is he talking about?
For that type of money you could do a TII swap.

bj4life 04-22-07 11:33 AM

street porting.... i am having him send me a sheet with the complete price breakdown.... there is really no one in this area that deals with the rotary motors... what do you think would be a better price for the above mentioned work?

trochoid 04-22-07 12:04 PM

Price is way to high. I don't know what the conversion rate between Canadian and US dollars is, but here you could get an S3 12A installed for under 3k USD, not counting intake and exhaust. Rwhp is a tad bit on the high side for a streetport 12A.

Now, if that price includes new housings, irons, clutch and a full RB exhaust system, that's more reasonable. Doc's right though, for that kind of money you could do a TII swap.

XLR8 04-22-07 01:03 PM

Personally I think it sounds reasonable,...if the shoe fits.

Like Trochoid said, if the engine is being rebuilt quality, and the supporting mods are being done right with brand name parts then it's about right. Hell, a SP 12a from Atkins is almost $3k American. The intake and exhaust setup alone from RB is almost $2k, including pump and regulator. Also, labor will play a big factor as well. Specialty shops arn't cheap. Especially if the work is well known and quality.

Personally, if you had the means, I would do it myself and save some dough.

Good luck!

thanks guys, when he sends me the complete price breakdown i will post it and get a final thought from you guys....

I bought 4 slotted brakes off them for my GSL-SE. They sent me 3 1st gen brakes, 1 2nd gen one. When I complained thay just told me tough, the 1st gen ones are discontinued.

I sure hope you are not talking about going to RX7 specialties. Do some searching with there name and you will see why I say that.

Goto Conroy (outside of sherwood park), or Matt (Wetaskinawin), may have a little longer turn around time, but they do excellent work.

Very honestly I would almost do it myself, I just don't have the time...

bj4life 04-23-07 08:17 PM

well i tried searching to find some more feedback on this guys place but i really couldn't find anything so if you guys could direct me in the right direction that would be good, or if you guys could even just tell me about your experiences with the rx7 specialties shop in calgary it would be much appreciated

Conroy, lol, yeah right. I got screwed by him on a carb, advised on a carb hat that cost me 200 bucks that didn't work worth shit, and had a friend buy a streetported 13b. After the 13b blew up we tore it down and there was no porting at all. Check out Conroys streetport vs Adams streetport. You be the judge, Conroys is the plate with no tape or template on it. As for the motor blowing up, well we won't blame Conroy for that, wink wink Sean.

I have spoke with the likes of Max,Adam, and Dan Atkins at length many times and these guys were always helpful. Conroy on the other hand said, and I quote "I don't make a living and pay my bills giving advice over the phone". That was the end of any further negotiation with him.

84stock 04-27-07 11:39 PM

I have learned a lot over the past 4 years from a wide variety of people. You will find most on the forum very very helpful, and you will build a relationship with many as well. For me, I like to help the newbies and am always willing the lend a hand to anyone here at home. I remember one of my first posts asking how to port my motor without pulling it apart (LOL!). I'm an old v8 guy who has come a long way, some day I hope to do a rebuild of my own perhaps.

Dan_s_young 04-27-07 11:53 PM

Well it's a personal opinion thing. I have heard many positive reviews about Conroy, but few about RX7 specialties.

In my experience Conroy has always been very help and is knowledgable. But at the same time, I personally wouldn't want ANYONE to build a motor for me. Why? Not because these guys don't do good jobs but rather, that way you have no one to blame but yourself, and it gets done the way you want it....

The final decision is one that only the person spending the money can decide. There are many view points and many different ways to build motors, some better than others. I think with business there is always going to be some people who end up not being happy.

id rebuild it myself..bottom line..but thats just me..

Everyone has their loyalty, I've met guys at the track (rx7 road racers) that turned to Adam after Conroy and haven't looked back, others who swear by Conroy, and others who swear against both and do their own work. Unfortunately everyone has to "start" somewhere, and that often isn't doing it yourself for many. I forone am going with a different builder this time based on opportunity and my trust in the builder. Adam served me fine, but like anyone, I am always looking for something different.

84stock 04-28-07 12:59 AM

I've seen an S5 high compression n/a mootr done by Adam that works nice and smooth, and I've seen a peri-port done by Max that's, well, gotta say holy shit awesome! There is talent around, important thing is to build trust and a good relationship with whomever you deal with. Anyone with a good relationship and built up trust should get looked after well by any party if the trust and respect is mutual. Do i think Conroy "can" build a good motor, yep, but I only have very limited experience with him, perhaps I base my perception unfairly on a few details, who knows?

bj4life 04-28-07 10:19 PM

well i went and met adam today, hes a hell of a guy answered all of my questions and was really informative, i am gonna totally use him and his business to do all of my rx7 mods.... he explained everything to detail even though i haven't decided what i am gonna do for sure yet....
