need 12a build sugestions

ok guys heres the deal, i have a 85 with only 85k miles, runs excelent but i want power and something to build so.....i just bought that rebuilt tranny that
82blackgsl was selling and im going back on wednesday to buy his "rebuilt" 12A, i looked at it last week in person it looks nice, not sure if its actually rebuilt but i trust him.

anyways, im putting my 7 away for winter and want to build this 12a into something...something that will be a fairly easy build, on a budget(probably about 1000$ thats it) and of course more power.

so i had a few ideas, not sure which way to go, give me all your sugestions and help me decide. remember i have 1000$ to work with here..

possible setups:
1. streetport + RB intake and Carb, no emissions

2. stock ports + turbo blow through setup

3. stock ports + supercharger?

????idk what to do...its a dd in teh summer so nothing crazy, only a grand to work with, not too much rotary knowledge yet but im pretty knowledgeable with building 350s and such.

thanks for the input guys:)

im really leaning towards option 1 cuz its simple, cheap, and i dont know anything about forced injection but it sounds like a headache...

anyone have an idea of the power range i will be looking at with this setup?

...rebuilt 12a 0 miles, street port(done by mazdatrix or someone like that), rb intake, holly carb, rb header, stock cat, straight piped after cat, and stock fan also.

I don't quite understand what you are doing and why? You say you are getting a different tranny and rebuilt 12a.... why?? Is your not running right currently?

Another problem is your budget of $1000.... one thousand does not go far now-a-days...

What do you have for an exhaust system? If you want a good reliable driver, I would spend the money getting it running right and buy a Racing Beat street port exhaust system.. By the time you bought the header and full exhaust system and had it shipped to Wisconsin from California, you are going to blow your whole budget!

Don't cheap on the exhaust system... I know a lot of folks who have tried to cheap on the exhaust system only to have mufflers that blow out, and they sound like hammered dog shit...

If you did the exhaust, got your ignition working 100% and added a Sterling carb, you would have a nice running setup that would give you a good base to work with.

Then once you have more money to spend, go ahead and street port the engine...

Turbo or Supercharger would be nice, but $1000 would just be the down payment on that project!!!

Good Luck!!

I agree with 80s old school a thousand bucks isn't going to get you very far. :icon_no2: I started out with a 13B 4port that blew a water jacket. When I got into it I ended up needing all sorts of parts(previous owner cheaped on a lot of parts) I put the car away for almost two years. In that time I did a lot of research, read a few books, practiced porting and saved up and bought parts. Two years later I have a 13B 4port that I built and ported myself. I ended up going with a Judge Ito SP, Weber 48 IDA, Gilmer pulleys, MSD, GSL-SE Suspension on my SA. Just have patience my friend and make some sacrifices so you could get some more cash together. I have about close to 3,500.00 in my SA and nowhere close to done. It can be depressing at times but it will pay off when you know that you have a nice built up motor and the supporting mods to help the car be fast and safe. Good Luck :icon_tup:

Those above have given the best advice, but if you insist on spending the money now:
Just having mazdatirx port your engine plus the shipping would be your whole budget. Unless you are going to do the porting yourself I don't think it is possible with your budget. Personally I would look at the rx7 club classifieds daily and keep a lookout for a used RB exhaust system or parts. I would have Sterling build your nikki. Those two will probably use all the cash. It is also very possible to find other performance parts for sale in the classifieds. Sometimes whole built engines are in that price range. Keep yours eyes out, and good luck.:icon_tup:

yep, to answe the first question its running great right now. i got a rebuilt tranny cuz my syncros went bad in 2nd and third and i hated that grinding. lol and teh motor runs excellent and is all complete but basicly i want something to do durring the winter cuz i just cant stand not driving my fb all winter!! plus i want something i with a little more pep to it(not to say my 12a isnt quick cuz it is lol).

i paid 250 for my rebuilt 12a which im picking up this weekend, i managed to through in an extra 250 into my budget and im still saving, but anyways once i have the block home ill tare it apart, and send in the parts for a streetport, i got my quote of 400$ all shipped and done. once i get it back ill get the nessicary gaskets, put it back together, then start searching the forum classifieds for a carb, and intake, also i am already starting to build a custom header(i love welding and i have made headers before, for my jeeps) the header is costing me 20$ in pipe and gas plus a 15$ for a flange from atkins.

once all thats done and the motor is together ill pull mine out, and put it on the shelf to be my spare:) drop the new motor in and then build my exhaust which im going to do myself also. all said and done im sure ill be able to stay under my budget and have a nice freshly build streetported engine with no emissions and some of my custom work to show off;) and my goal is to be done by spring, and can be easily accomplished.

well thats my plan anyways haha im gonna start a build thread cuz i already have lots of pics!

For 1000 on a budget?

I would go get my hook up at my Mazda dealership for a soft seal rebuild ($89 after shipping/tax) giving me everything I need to slap something together. I would go with a bridgeport. Get yourself a Weber 48IDA and manifold, New fuel pump and regulator, and you are looking at about $700 spent so far. Get a RB streetable header and full exhaust (about $200) and you have $100 to play around with jets.

Sure, you wouldn't want to rev over 8000, but I guarantee that you will make over 170WHP.

Jeezus....this is an interesting idea.. I have a question.. 170 WHP sounds good... Keeping revs down to 8000 sounds great because I know it costs $$$$ to be able to rev higher up.

How much HP do you lose by not letting a BP engine rev higher?? What would be the "normal" peak HP "RPM" on a BP motor?

I have thought about BP engines because they do make power and they sound oh so cool... just was wondering how a "budget" BP engine would work!!
