n00b Q: How do i tell if my apex/rotor seals are going out? (1984 GSL:SE
Hello all,
I am thinking about buying a high mile (143xxx) RX7, but I am worried that the engine may be going to die.
This is based on the high mileage. I know that if it is taken care of, it will last for a long time
I just want to the tell tale signs that my engine is going to die.
BTW
The car is a 1984 GSLSE (13B
)

does it smoke now? white smoke or lots of blue smoke could be some signs that the motor is comin due for a rebuild. I bought my SE with 148000 and it was good for a while, would still be on that motor had I not been careless with my revs..
YOu can do a compression check! But you will never know for sure unless you either take it out or look in the exhaust ports! I bought a 178,xxx miled fb and it ran good so that was good enough for me. I now have 180xxx miles and its still running strong. If it runs good
go for it!

go for it!

84SE: 188,600 miles.
The 13b's in SE's will last; 3mm apex seals, a larger OMP with 'squirters' in the intake AND on on the apex seals in the housings, and a conservative EFI map.
I wouldn't say that car is a high-miles car, but I also wouldn't be scared away from it. I also wouldn't be revving it to 8k every light, either! Take it easy and that engine will last a good long while. Standard reliability applies here, and this requires some effort on your part to replace belts, change oil, take care of small problems before they become big problems, and you should be fine. HTH,
