its your sub zero start assist fluid.

^^ As hornbm said...

It's purpose is to help the engine start when it's reeeeally cold out.
The solenoid (or is it a pump?) on mine is completely corroded over, so I don't imagine mine works.

its one of the things commonly removed. The other one is the hot start assist motor. U can trash that as well.

just another thing Mazda put on there to make it cost more.... I threw mine away a long time ago...

You really need to get your hands on a Haynes and/or factory service manual. The answer to this and many other questions are in there.

Ditch the hot start assist and the sub-zero thing. The sub-zero unit is likely not working at all, and the hot start assist can be easily replaced by using your foot to lightly press the accel pedal on hot starts. It just cracks the throttle open a wee bit for the hot starts.

Where is the hot start assist motor located and what does it look like?

The_Dude 03-25-04 12:54 PM

hot start assist motor is completely on the other side ... it has a cable linkage going from it to where the gas pedal linkages go ... I have my hot start assist and my sub-zero fluid in there, both work fine and My engine starts at -40 (celsius ) no problem so I'm leaving them in there. If they bust, I just wont replace them ;)

The hot start assist is right behind the strut tower on the driver's side. It's a flat thing with connectors. Mine was making a horrendous grinding noice, pulled the connectors apart, problem solved.
