My First Project!!!
 

Sadly, because I don't have a digital camera, I can't show you pictures, but I can tell you guys the details.

For one, it's a 1983 GSL RX-7. The paint is sun-worn and old, so from the best of my knowledge it's a silver color. This is my first actual car project, and since I know nothing more than the basics of car maintanence, I understand it'll be difficult.

From what I can see, the problems are as follows:

Needs an oil cap.
Needs a new distributor cap and rotor.
Needs an oil change, as well as an oil filter change.
Needs fuel filter and air filter.
Has an oil leak, but a minor one.
Needs a new battery.
Fuel line is clogged.
Interior needs to be redone.
Has a superficial exterior rust spot on the front right fender (fixable)
Has a dent on the front-left fender (fixable).
Rear-right tail light cover is missing.
Rear bumper is dented.

My friends have warned me against buying it, but for only $300, I won't really care if it isn't usable or not. The engine is clean enough that if I really don't have any hope, I can tear it apart and sell it piece by piece.

The only problem is that it has to be towed. :( Gotta take care of that.

it saddens me that some people let their cars to get to that state. Yet i feel glad that someone with a passion for cars has taken it up to restore it to it's former condition.

have fun, ask alot questions, you'll learn a ton just on these forums, and get a Haynes manual.

You didn't say if it was running or not?

Sadly, I don't think it does start or will without some minor work, but even then I do believe it will run rough. It's been sitting for about 5 years and they told me that they started it to move it from the garage to the driveway, which leaves room for more problems later on if it's true, and makes me a little bit agitated if not.

Being as I'm 16, it's kinda a bad idea for me to take on this task, but due to my "situation" I have time for a full-time job where I will probably spend my hobby money on this.

Mainly, I've made the decision to try this because 1, my mom is willing to help me with the legal parts of the project (insurance forms, explaining registration and title) which, she never does. 2, because people say I can't do it. I'm never one to be talked down like that. And finally and most importantly and number 3, because it has the potential to be a HOT and CLASSIC car.

I was going to get an '83 GSL for my first car.. I bought an '85 fiero v6 instead.. I sold it a year later for an '88 turboII.. wish I hadn't bought the damn fiero, let me tell you!

worst case scenerio: you need a new motor, which you can find anywhere for under $200....

sorry to say but if you got rust on the outside finder, check the interior wheel wells, they are cancerous with rust on most 7's

if sitting 5 years better drain fuel, and probably need a carb rebuild, you may just get away with taking the top off to clean bowls and needles, and making sure there are no jet clogs

Before I even put the key in the ignition, I plan on changing the battery, draining the fuel and oil and then replacing them, plugs (Yes, I know, NDK) and wires, and all of those "tune-up" type things, as well as cleaning out the carb.

My only fear is that after all those years something is wrong with something internal. :( I'd be so sad if I started it up and found out an Apex seal was broken or that the oil leak was a lot worse than I thought. I have to at least get this thing running before I can use my friend's engine lift.

Before cranking it I'd put some diesel down the carb and let it sit for a few days while you're doing other stuff... it soaks in and destroys the carbon.

Sometimes rotaries that were JUST FINE when parked will have bad compression when started again..

well, a little check you can do for the apex seals and make shure your getting compression....take two spark plugs (one for each rotor) take a socket to fit over the fly wheel and turn the the socket and listen all SHH shoudl be egual in pitch and length, turn it quite a full times or until each rotor makes a full rotation. That's a quick compression test i learned from a few buddies in owensboro.
