MY FIRST EVER rx7
 

Hi everyone, well after playing with a host of other classic cars (MG'S Scimitars, Spitfires, and my Jenson Healey) I,ve just discovered the RX7. I was amazed at the first gen I saw and duly bought an 1984 model. It,s the first car in a long time that once I saw it I had to have one. What I'd like is advice about running this car, the do,s and don,ts. What type of performance can I expect-Idon,t pick it up till next week.

Welcome! What model is your 84 (GS, GSL, -SE, etc.)?

Congrats on buying an awesome car! What's the condition like? You're gonna find a lot of great people & information here.

As for running it, the do's & don'ts, performance, etc., can you be a little more detailed about what you're wanting to know? These cars have great potential, depending on what you're wanting out of it.

congrats...what model is it? S-GS-GSL or GSL-SE?

first things i would do is give it a good tune up comprised of the following...

oil & filter change
spark plugs, cap, rotor and wires
fuel filter change
coolant flush and refill
change belts
tranny fluid change
rear differential fluid change
check brakes and fluid level
check clutch fluid
power steering fluid change (if you have one)

once done that work on getting the old carbon out...either by the water treatment or mmo premixing...do a search for "carbon buildup" and you'll see how to's on these...

after the engine is running good then work on new tires, springs, bushings, shocks and struts...

this is what i would do if all you knew is what you described...unless you know the person and know that they kept it well maintaned...

cheers, its an s model - i gotta start somewhere!! these engines are totally new to me so its a rapid learning curve for me! As to the condition I,ll post some photos next week. The car is stock standard and in amazing condition. Plans will be for some sweet upgrades to gain extra power after I,ve read up on the engine

do, the maintanance to make sure running properly. clean out any carbon. THEN DRIVE THE HELL OUT OF IT! Don't shift under 5g's try not to go over 7g's . dump the clutch in 1st 2nd 3rd and if good engine 4th. Hit the curvs as fast as you can. that big pedal in the middle? well you can get rid of that one, it only slows you down. oh yeah, check the oil often. well thats all i can say to ya.

congrats man!!! i hope you like learning about and working on cars. even tho im a mechanic it was a hard and fast crash course when i got my first rx7, it was hard to find anybody in my area that new anything about them much less to help me out on it. anyways just keep up on the maintanance and check in here often,great group of people.

Something obvious we Rotorheads all take for granted, but Newbie: CHECK THE OIL REGULARLY!!! If you don't already know, there is an oil metering pump that feeds oil from the pan DIRECTLY into the intake! MEANING: oil level drops, since this oil is burned up in combustion. You should go through a quart every....??...500 to 1500 miles?? this varies from car-to-car, but figure out what your's consumes and WATCH IT! Enjoy!!

welcome. i am sure you will find all you need in this forum. the best advice is laid out there for you already. all i can tell you is to do the work yourself. do not hire it out. the car is very simple to work on and most work can be done by yourself.
