My exhuast STINKS!

My exhaust is smelling pretty damn bad, and my parents are really starting to complain. I currently have stock exhuast, but the cats are hollowed out. Also got a weber 48 DCOE as well.

Is there anything I can do to tune down the stink a bit?

Steve Shulz 01-15-04 06:54 PM

Put on a new cat and hook up your ACV correctly! Other than that, park down the road or get a bunch of fabreez and spray it in your folks face. :) not much you really can do. I havent smelled you and your just down the road, bet youve smelled mine though!

Install a new cat? :D

hornbm 01-15-04 06:59 PM

cat is not an option, unfortunately. What about you guys with racing beat exhaust? How does yours smell? Is it absolutely awful?

Rotor13B 01-15-04 07:17 PM

Define smelly. Mine stinked like fuel but when I got the mixture right it didn't smell as bad. Still smelled like fuel though. Not much you can do about it without a cat and airpump.

krazy_1st_gen 01-15-04 07:38 PM

my sa smells pretty bad. when i sit at the stop light waiting for it to turn green my eyes start to water. i keep tryin to tune the R.E. duals i have but can never get it right.

eddierotary 01-15-04 07:38 PM

get use to it, mine was worse with the weber and turbo.

Gregs 01-15-04 07:39 PM

mine used to smell like if you held a match up to the tail pipe you would have an instant flame thrower

now it smells normal

Did you do anything to your car to make it smell normall all of a sudden? Or was it just POOF! and the smell magically went away one day?

wwilliam54 01-15-04 07:46 PM

jet you primaries down a size?

hornbm 01-15-04 07:50 PM

come on guys think about it . why does it smell so bad? how does it run? rough, miss now and then? strong at one part of the power band and week else where? all you guys have tuneing issues if it smells that bad. fuel and spark are why they smell. get the timeing right then tune the carb( thats more than just setting the idel and mixture screws) like wwillams54 said the jets in the carb. it may be more than just the primaries in some of your cases though. I have had sa,webs, dels,ss,mukni, and some lessor carbs and can say when set up right it should not be that bad. a little off will make a big differance in smell and performance I had the same experance with smell tell I was shown by someone else. one time it was as simple as the wrong fuel pressure. get it right and you will get a big smile after you drive it.

hornbm 01-15-04 08:18 PM

Ok well I'm running my timing 10 degrees BTDC. The car hauls ass and runs really smooth. However at idle its very rough. I have my idle set to 1300RPM because its a new motor nad I havent finished breaking it in yet. So what I'm figuring is its my idle jets. Mabey they're just the wrong size? Or mabey its because my motor is still breaking in. I got about 350 miles on it so far.

I dont think its my timing, because it doent ping or anything when I mash on the throttle or go up a hill. I doubt its my fuel pressure because it seems fine throught the entire power band. (havent reved it above 4k yet tho, still breaking it in first.)

kuhlrx7 01-15-04 09:53 PM

fuel pressure could be too much. that could show up as running to rich at idle. what do you have the pressure set at? and what type of porting was done to the engine? unless it was a type of bridge it should be idleing less than 1300rpm smoothly. what jets are you running in the carb? how was the timeing set at 10btdc ? if it is idleing that rough and smells that bad it could run better with less smell. does it smell only at idle? if so may be you are corect about what jets you need to replace. why dont you pm carl he may know better

new motor

1300 that too high, is a miracle that your car doesnt backfire when you shut her off. you should be able to get it at 900 rpm even with a new motor. and 10btdc, you need to have it a 5 atdc in leading and 20 trailing, like racing beat say. and about the smell, well i had the same problme and it was bad and i change jets and everything and still was there

g prime 01-15-04 10:26 PM

How do you check/change the fuel pressure? I'm having the same issues.

elvisjer 01-15-04 10:33 PM

Heres the problem. Older cats when running with a heavy fuel or "rich" fuel load without the air it needs will react with the cats making a smell like rotten eggs. Cats arn't simply horsepower robbing wirescreens but are chemical coated and VERY genious. Yes i took mine off but thats your problem. It could be a air sensor problem or jets. just get less fuel in that engine.

Jeff20B 01-16-04 03:16 PM

Upgrade the ignition (if you haven't yet). It worked for me several times over.

clean85owner 01-16-04 03:33 PM

My car idles at about 1200-1300rpm. After idling for a while I have to rev it a bit to clean it out, to ensure I will get instant throttle response. If not, the car will burp a little when you hit the gas. I guess that is normal? Heh. Everyone except my father and I think the car stinks. I guess we are the only true rotor heads around here. Heh. My dad said he was going to put a high-flow cat on it, but he hasn't yet and I hope he doen't. I don't have to worry about emissions because they don't check around here. Later.

Ludicrous 01-16-04 03:38 PM

Mine has no cats, etc., puts out enough fumes to make your eyes water. :D Thinking of putting a high flow cat on it, just to tone down the smell some - friggen tree huggers in CA are harsh about that stuff.

rhinor61 01-16-04 07:10 PM

My stinks bad too.. GSL-SE with stock FI with RB for race header/exhaust.

Weew..... Not running rich, O2 gauge show ok.

Not sure what to do, but stopping and sitting at a stop light is not good.

is the motor tuned up?

new plugs?
new cap and rotor?
good ignition wires?
good ignition coils? i use msd blaster2
new fuel filter?
post what all of your carb jetting is, some people here might be able to compare to theirs.
is the tailpipe black? black means too rich.

when was the last time the weber was rebuilt? it could need a full rebuild or mabye just clean the daylights out of it with a big can of carb cleaner. remove all the jets and scrub them with a toothbrush.

it could be burning some oil which adds to the funk.
