My car is now not a gimp....

WOOHOOO I took my car for its first drive today as a 5speed and I gotta say IT KICKS ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got around all the 'oh shits!' and 'what the fucks' and she is finally running and I LOVE IT!

The Steel Flywheel doesnt affect driveability much at all, she just doesnt like climbing hills in 2nd gear at low RPMS and you gotta rev her to around 1500rpm to start but thats not nearly as bad as I expected it might be.

Also the starter I have has that whine of death, that high pitched weeeeeeer so I am not sure how much longer its gonna last, but it starts the car so... It sounds like my dads old dodge van... ewwww

but other than that everything is great, the mount i had to fabricate works... but it could still use a bit of strengthening up altho the tranny def isnt gonna go anywhere the way it is now.

I also had to ghetto rig some wiring cause the autos wiring harness was different than the manual ones... so a few trips to the RatShack are in order.

The tranny I got from the most ghetto yard works great! It hasnt made any funny noises or grind yet, altho it is Notchy to say the least, it notches into every gear w/ a bit of a nudge.

I cant wait till the 500mile mark so I can start romping on her! Gotta wait for the darned flywheel, clutch, pressureplate to wear in, it should also be good for the transmission cause god knows how long since its last use... But I can already see the cars got some nice pickup and the noise of the rotary... I love it

Nice Work, Serzy!

Me and my boys are all proud of you! I've done that auto/manual trans change way back when I was racing Volvos, but haven't done that with a Seven....

Well Done! Have a Milkshake on me, pardner:D

Denny, from the 'ol corncrib....

Sweet job buddy!!!! Sounds like it was quite a job, I'll bet you could do just about anything after figuring that out.

So you're saying that mean looking rotary beast of yours has been automatic all along? I'll bet you couldn't even redline it before!?!

Welcome to the world of 8000 rpm my friend.... enjoy it.

Serzy 07-31-01 01:32 PM

Yep shes been an automatic for her whole life of 76k until now!

But the world of 8000rpm redline will have to wait till after 500miles while she gets broken in :( but I can wait...

Notchy shifting?

Someone explain notchy shifting to me...

I understood it as when you put it in gear, you knew it was in gear with a nice mechanical tactile feedback and almost audible click, as if you had put the shift lever into a notch... Unlike my honda with it's 2 foot long shift lever and cables that go from that to the tranny. With it in gear, I can move the lever an inch in any direction without taking it out of gear. I like how the 7 locks into gear... Can't reach over to mess with the radio and maybe accidentally knock it out, not that that's ever happened to me in any car.

Suparslinc 07-31-01 08:34 PM

Thats great! The autos tend to be in better condition because of the early shifts.
That sound off your starter might be the bendix arm. I'm not sure if you can get a kit to replace that otherwise I have a spare starter off my '84 GSL I can give you cheap.

Bout damn time! :D

Serzy 08-01-01 01:11 AM

Supraslinc PM me or email me at paintbal@fnol.net with just how cheap ;)

The starter in there now even has very visible wear on its teeth, its just a POS

And pele your description of notchiness is exactly how mine fealt.

Sweet man!!!

i couldn't imagine my rex with a auto transmission. it defies the whole purpose of the fun the rex can give you!!! i'm sure you realize that now!!! now, remember, take it easy till you break it in, then really make it fly!!

BTW, Serzy, were my wire colors correct on the interlock bypass? Black with yellow stripe to Black with white stripe? Or was it the Green with yellow stripe to red with white stripe?

Actually you were completely wrong ;) the black w/yellow wires run to the switch and than from there runs to the starter... i just had to run the black w/yellow to the starter ;). I also have the reverse lights rigged up now... I still am unclear on what the 3 wires that come out of the speedometer cable thingie are for... O/D switch I think... but I cant find what to connect em to...
