MSD "issues"
Okay guys, the car is an 85 GS, manual tranny... racing beat header and presilencer, with a mind train cat-back... everything else was stock... Today, I installed MSD coils, with an MSD 6AL ignition, following the tutorial on Mazspeed... after finishing the install, I fired the car up... MSD sounds like it's turning itself on/off at will... probably a loose wire.. What worries me though, is that the rev limiter doesn't seem to be working, and it sounds like the timing is off... Is there a step not listed on the tutorial? Is it possible I screwed something up? Throw out some ideas, I'm going to tackle it again after work tomorrow...

I installed a couple of these and never heard of these problems - anyway:
Turning on/off - check your main power to the battery and the ground - both need to be very solid. I don't know what you're grounding to but make sure the paint (if any) is stripped away along with any dirt/grease. One thing that some people have trouble with is the orange/green to the cap - these need to be solid as well, no loose connections. I've heard of a few guys using a hollowed out ignitor rather than crimp connectors into the cap - supposed to be a much better set up. Other than that, check all connections (no brainer) Rev limiter not working - what pill are you using? IMO the 6A is a better set up than the AL - that said, if I was using the AL I would use the highest pill and forget about limiting rev's. After all, you 're only limiting the leading with a direct fire set up - not sure that's a good thing.;) - Oh yeh, I'll assume you have the MSD set up for a 4 cylinder (wire cut). Most of this is obvious but I thought I'd share what I know - hope you solve it - good luck!:) |
I had my connection to the distributor (green/purple wires) just "plugged" in. It vibrated out over time and I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was wrong with the car. Make sure it's secure.

Did I say Green / Orange??
Jerij is correct - green / purple, but I think you knew what I was getting at (been awhile since I looked) - sorry for any confusion |
just in case some people missed it...
