MSD igniton?
So I was surfing Ebay tonight and fell upon MSD blaster 2 ignition coils... are these a straight forward pull my coils out and place these in there place type of upgrade or am I missing another upgrade needed to make this venture worth the money?

Yes, they are a straight up replacement for your coils, or at least I hope cause I run them on mine.
I am confident they help out my ignition/spark, but I can't put that in any quantifiable amount. |
Yes and no. They will be able to be fired via the stock ignitors, but may shorten the life of the stock ignitor. Also, despite the fact that they are a direct fit in the stock location, blaster2 coils are designed to be mounted virtically, not horizontally, and may cause the coils to overheat and fail.

So if the stock ignitors are too weak do you know if MSD makes ignitors for our car or are we talking about me having to buy a MSD controler box type setup

Its not that they are too weak, its just they weren't meant to fire higher powered coils all the time. Its not a garantee that they will die, but more of an increase of likelyhood of ignitor death. You could do a search on the "GM HEI Ignitor" adaption, as they are capable of driving higher output coils a little better, and you could also bypass this minor problem with an ignition module like an MSD or Accell box

MSD notes in their installation instructions for the Blaster2 and Blaster 3 that they recommen vertical installation. However, for the High Vibration Blaster coil, they state it can be mounted in any position.

Coils are not going to add much to the performance of your ignition system and as noted already may cause your ignitors to fail early. Easiest upgrade I have found is an MSD box with second gen leading coils firing the leading plugs and the trailing plugs left stock. Search for direct fire ignition. There are lots of threads here about different configurations of direct fire ignition.

If your ignition is stock and working as it should, blaster coils alone are not a cost effective upgrade, in my opinion. Look into dlidfis, 2gdfis, or tfildfis for an upgrade that can be cheaper and much more effective.
Edit: 74Rx4 posted just just before I did. I run the same ignition he has, and it is much more effective than stock. The other options are excellent as well. |
i agree with the direct fire system. i did it to my car a month or 2 and it made a big difference. it was a pretty easy upgrade. i didnt use fc coils though. i used accel super coils.

A few months ago I installed DLIDFIS in my GSL-SE with a 4 port R5 13B and it turned out really well. Just used stock J-109 ignitors and Diamond coils.

Of course I keep trailing, even though it doesn't do anything for power. I set the split to about 10 degrees. Then I move the trailing wires to the leading part of the cap.

So I have been looking around about this direct fire and I wunder... Can I use 3 coils off the 1st gen and direct wire one per leading plug. And use the 3rd for trailing and also use the dizzy to activate the coils for firing? I would like to hold off on buying a MSD 6A box right now kids Xmas and all.

Just tested my hook ups for direct fire and it runs so I will test it out here in a little bit... if everything is working good I will make a bracket for the setup and make it permanent.

Just got back from playing and well I am not happy feels like I blew the clutch apart, still moves but trans is touching a little bit even with the clutch completly depressed. Good thing I have a brand new clutch in my old parts car. Guess we all know what I will be doing this weekend.

On the bright side to remove my other engine and trans. it only took 6 bolts and it was lifting out. I didn't get as far as I would have liked to this weekend but the car is still drivable so I can still drive to work in it while I get the other clutch out.

So does one upgrade to a stage 2 or 3 clutch since my new clutch just went out on me? puck style or not?

So slap this guy in the back of the head.... not sure how but the #2 plug wires got switched around when I installed the direct fire. Engine still has a shake / vibration when clutch is on. I did notice the 12a clutch from my 82 is smaller than that in the 83 so I will have to wait untill I buy another clutch this winter when the car gets in for work / hibernation. Also I found that I lost spark on my direct fire but not from the coils, I think the ignitors went out or. The wires are not heavy enough.

So I got the direct fire ignition set up and mounted. So with both lead plugs direct fire can I loose the dizzy or do I have to set up another direct fire setup and run 4 coils before I can loose the dizzy?

You cannot lose the dizzy.
