More on airpumps. -SE specific

Ok, I ended up in kinda a debate the other day and I kinda figured out that I wasn't sure what I was talking about... So here I am (yes I've already read the other threads)

Ok, I've removed my cats, so that isn't a concern, and now I'd like to remove the silly airpump, BUT I want my 5&6 ports to still function. (close low, open high, not wired)

I know you can hook up the airpump to open up the aux ports if there isn't enough backpressure, but that still requires running the airpump. Is there a way to remove the airpump & still have the aux ports work? I'm running the full dual RB streetport system, and the aux ports seem to be working now, but I'm still running the airpump ACV etc etc....

What options do I have?

MaTT_FoULk 10-07-02 10:34 AM

I was under the impression that the gsl-se had a 4 port 13b not a 6 port like in FCs.

MyRxBad 10-07-02 11:02 AM

If not off the exhaust or the air pump, then you'd probably have to hook up something electrical running off the tach signal.

Manntis 10-07-02 11:08 AM

With the Racing Beat exhaust system it takes exhaust pressure from the presilencer and feeds it to the valve just behind where the airpump is to open the aux. ports.

I since had my airpump removed and it seems to work fine.

MIKE-P-28 10-07-02 01:02 PM

Yeah I thought the racing beat exhaust has the implementation to do this w/o the air pump.

If it isn't currently using the airpump for the ports, and they are working, just rip the thing off. It won't affect a thing.

RotorMotorDriver 10-07-02 11:36 PM

I always thought the exhaust system is designed for use with the port actuators also...

if im not mistaken the only 4 port 13B's are the NA's except for the old REPU's and other older mazda rotary vehicles.

call up racing Beat and have them send you their catalog. Basic but very informative :wiggle:

XLR8 10-08-02 01:35 AM

13B Turbo's are 4 port.

I have talked with mazdatrix on the phone, and they say something like this:

The racing beat system for GSL-SE operates under the assumption you are using a carb, so it goes by the backpressure from the presilencers to open the auxiliary ports. Because of this, the ports open WAY later (hihger RPM) than they should.

Mazdatrix makes a modified street port system for se's running the stock or aftermaket FI route, which simply adds the correct connection in the header to put the O2 sensor. This opens the aux. ports at the appropriate levels for better acceleration.

Heres the link to the product:

http://www.mazdatrix.com/r-exh-85.htm
(listed as "13B 6 PORT (using injection, has 6-port actuation and O2 sensor).. 16-MZTX-4230")

The price on that one is $724.00 .

Unless someone can prove me/ them wrong, this is the setup i'm ordering as soon as i sell my GS.

RacerX7fb 10-08-02 02:49 AM

hey ioTus,
That IS Racing Beats system on the Mazdatrix site!!! That's what they sell. O2 sensors have nothing to do with how the ports open. NADA

ioTus 10-08-02 03:18 AM

I know those are the RB systems.

Mazdatrix would beg to differ with you.

THe basic Racing Beat street port exhaust for the GSL-SE is under the assumption you are running a carb on your car.

I asked the guy from mazdatrix "so if i were to order it directly from racing beat, their street port exhaust system for gsl-se, it isnt going to have the aux. port actuators?"

"Nope, its the setup for carbs only. if you are keeping FI you need the aux. port actuators and O2 sensor in there to get them working right"

Call them yourself:

562-426-7960 ask for tech info on that product number.

Unless i totally misunderstood the dude, or he was just making stuff up tho. I kinda thought these guys knew where it was at tho.

its your call.

OK

TO CLARIFY.

The 5th and 6th ports are activated by exhaust back pressure in stock GSL-SE's.

Racing Beat sells complete exhaust systems for the GSL-SE, and even has a complete "street-port" exhaust system specifically for the GSL-SE, but that model doesn't have a provision for the 6th port actuators.

You can also do an air pump modification to obtain the actuator openings as well, without using exhaust backpressure.

The PROPER setup on a stock (or even street-ported) 13B-6 port with actuators should be:

1) GSL-SE Header
2) Pre-Silencer (has provision for the air tube that opens the 5/6 ports)
http://www.racingbeat.com/photos/16407.jpg
3) Straight Pipe (local muffler shop)
4) Power Pulse / Primaflow muffler

This is exactly what I had on my streeported, fuel-injected GSL-SE with working actuators, and that car ran mid 14's all day.

thanks for the clarification on what you meant but who the heck did you speak with there at Mazdatrix? I'd have Dave smack him upside the head..like some of former RB employees needed. Racing Beat however does have a "street port" GSL-SE exhaust system INCLUDING back pressure pickup sensor tube, Part # 16399. Im not a expert on RB products but it does help to have their catalog in front of you. For know how, ask for Jim Tanner.

ioTus 10-08-02 07:43 PM

So that RB system you speak of will operate the aux. at the appropriate time??????

yes, that is what it was designed for.

brownmound 10-09-02 01:27 AM

This reminds me of the time I was trying to teach algebra to my mom.....

Right on.

brownmound 10-09-02 01:30 AM

Oh yes and Directfreak, does that chromed out header have a O2 sensor bung? I know I've read in the catalog that these headers DO NOT have O2 bungs, but I've heard hearsay otherwise. Sorry to be my mom....I should just call figgin RB.

Right on.

I have the Mtrix modified RB header. It will open the ports at the proper rpm no matter what exhaust system you run, presilencer, no presilencer, full dual pipes, whatever.

The way it works is Mtrix welds a bung on the curved header pipe (which is just a RB roadrace, UNCOLECTED header) imediatly after it exits the engine, so the exhaust has a straight shot into the bung as it exits the exhaust port. There is a metal tube that then runs a short distance (I presume to lower the temp of the exhaust) where you plug in the hose to your actuators.

I've had mine for 4 years, and it was well worth the extra 30 bucks I paid them over a standard RB header.

I don't know if it would be effective on a ported motor. Though all you'd have to do to raise the opening RPM is weld a smaller bung on there. (It's the diameter of the pick-up bung that regulates the RPM opening.

Mine does have an O2 sensor bung...
