MMO with synthetic oil, is it ok?

Hello everyone. I was wondering if it's possible to add MMO to the engine if it's running synthetic oil? Does MMO have a website?
Thanks.

smnc 01-22-03 09:52 PM

Since, as I ubderstand it, MMO is a synthetic oil, I don't see why not.
One question tho:
Why are you running Synthetic engine oil?

Wankelguy 01-23-03 12:57 PM

I wouldn't be so sure that Marvel Mystery Oil is in fact a true "synthetic" oil, at least what is termed synthetic presently, as the stuff has been around since the fifties!
Actually, "synthetic" oil is just petroleum-based oil that has been molecularly (!) engineered. Running synthetic oil like Amsoil in a rotary reduces wear and actually produces more horsepower. I've read on this forum the opinion that using synthetic oil for injection/premix is not good, due to gummy deposits being formed.
I don't believe that is necessarily the case, as I have several friends running synthetics with no problems whatsoever. Just my two-cents. -WG

Mr_Rx7_Au 01-23-03 07:32 PM

I think you'd find most ppl here against Synthetic oil... though I havn't seen any negatives with a mate who uses Synthetic on his 83 rx7... on my 85 I don't use Synthetic because of the negatives I've HEARD about burning and leaving deposits, but firsthand I havn't seen any probs with either.

Upto you man...

Mr_Rx7_Au 01-23-03 07:34 PM

oh and hurrah, I'm now a rotorite. hehe.

Denny 01-23-03 07:52 PM

Very Interesting....

Synthetic plus MMO.....hmmmm....
In truth MMO is a petroleum distillate. Don't know how it would react with Syntheic????

Have no comment on regular oil vs. snythetic, except that the Mazda Factory didn't recommend it. This debate has been ongoing for quite some time, and I've still not heard of a reasonable explanation one way or the other.....I do trust MMO, and it's been around since the Twenties, originally designed as a supercharger lubricant.........

Denny,
From the 'ol corncrib....:D

RotorMotorDriver 01-23-03 07:55 PM

Ya know, I remember someone saying something about MMO having a minty aftertaste. I finally opened the bottle I have here and put some in my oil, and Ill be damned if the stuff doesnt kinda smell minty, lol.

82transam 01-23-03 09:17 PM

i sniffed it and it freaked me out, oil isn't supposed to be minty, odd....

jutny 01-23-03 09:23 PM

exhaust has a much different twinge to it when it's burning MMO...

btw, how well exactly does the MMO stay mixed with the gas if you're not driving the car (and sloshing the gas in the mean time)... cause i put in like 6 oz with 6 gallons of gas, and it's sat in one place for a week or 2, and when i run it, it just spits out blue smoke (which it didnt do when it was running straight gas)?

or is that something i'm gonna have to get used to running a 1oz:1gallon premix?

mmmm

so, who's gonna be the guy to taste the minty oil?

12aPwr 01-23-03 10:43 PM

it tastes sweet, just like antifreeze but i wouldnt know i just heard ;) btw what oil (non-synthetic) do you guys use? ive been usin castrol gtx but ive been wantin to not use it but i want to know whats good.

Pele 01-24-03 09:27 AM

Lube Job:

1 Shot Vodka
4 Oz MMO
Grenadine (Add to preference)

Serve in a cut open oil filter... Hang a mint leaf off the side for decoration.

:allcho:

Told y'all it was minty. Makes your breath fresh and gives you that friction free smile. :D

I wouldn't run synthetic unless I knew the oil control rings were in good shape (IE Recent rebuild) and I was running a modded/Disabled OMP... ANd tehn I wouldn't add MMO to it. I'd premix and add MMO to the Modded OMP.

Keep on using Castrol GTX....it's a low sulfur oil and it's good, pretty cheap too. I change my oil every 1,000 miles (turbo) and I would NEVER use synthetic.

JLIU 01-24-03 10:37 AM

I finally got enough balls to put MMO into my gastank. I put about 4oz to the full tank. So far I am impressed with the fact that the engine seems a bit quieter and the start up just a bit faster.(not that I had problem before). One more interesting note. The amount of start up white smoke actually reduced.(the regular cold start up smoke.) NO, I didn't smell any minty flavor in the exhaust.LOL!

Metamucil (SP?) Eat your heart out. Pill form is out.. Liquid is in.

Defprun 01-24-03 01:32 PM

I gotta try MMO. It is a petroleum based product and all...but it aint available to us canucks anymore. Anyone will to do border runs for us? :D

Hyper4mance2k 01-24-03 01:36 PM

mazda was recomending synthetic at seven stock synthetic is all that racing beat sells and or recomends. i'd say those are strong arguments to use synthetic oil don't you?!?!?!!?!?!?!??!?! i ran it once in my gs and the car felt like it had an extra 10 hp and ran sooooooo much smoooother!!!

Do you use 20w50? If so isn't that a bit thick for a turbo. Just curious.

one of the reasons that you feel a bit more power is due to the oil lowering your octane, thus easier boom. and rotaries like mint.;)

mwpayne 01-24-03 04:36 PM

Funny, Mazdatrix has a section on their site saying we should not use synthetic oil.
The debate continues...

:werd:

Now, for the last time, "synthetic" oil is petroleum-based. So is Marvel Mystery Oil. What's the prob?

I have a bottle of MMO here and it says ad 4oz. to 10 gallons of gas, so you doubled your dosage, that may be the problem. Thanks everyone. The question about Synthetic and MMO hit me the other day and I know there has been a lot of talk on here in the past about MMO. I learned about it on here and I use it every once in awhile in my Rx-7. I'm not running synthetic in my car. I was debating mixing the MMO and Synthetic oil in a piston powered Eclipse GSX I just purchased ;) (no comments from the funny farm). I thought maybe someone on here had tried it since a lot of people know about it here. Oh well. I'm not going to try it.
See ya.

I normally use 5w-30 in the cooler spring and fall and 10w-30 in the summer heat.

12aPwr 01-24-03 10:26 PM

what grade would be good for a 12a? 10-30? 20-50? etc??? ive been using 10-30

fatboy7 01-24-03 11:08 PM

In so cal I bet 20w-50 is going to be better. I know up here in UT that 10w-30 is what almost everyone uses.

racermike 01-25-03 01:32 AM

I have run AMSOIL for 20 years and never caused a problem and even fixed a few. If you run AMSOIL you can stick to the lighter wieghts and not go to 20w50 even for high heat or load. ALL CAR MANUFACTURES said "NO" to synthetics for many years. Now many come from the factory filled with it and so do many "replacement" motors. I think people get too bound up in old "stories" that become "fact" as the years pass. I won't vouche for other brands, but I use AMSOIL in everything I keep and some of the cars I sell. Untill I personally see it do harm, I like the decrease in friction and heat, and the increased wear protection it affords. I do NOT however mix additives with it. If I think an engine needs something "extra" to clean it up for example, I will use the additive with regular oil, then switch to straight synthetic.

bliffle 01-25-03 03:06 AM

MMO is great for trumpet players 'cause it smells like valve oil, one of the most addictive aromas known to man.
