i have this hole under the transmission towards the front by the oil pan, looks like there seems to have been some plug or something there but - i cant' find it in the parts catalog and dont' know what belongs here.. can you let me know if this is just some regular rubber or plastic plug?? or am i missing something important here?

Thats a rubber plug hole. Just double checked under my 3rd series 1st gen car

Thanks guys. I'm glad it's just for a rubber plug. If anyone happens to come up with a part number please let me know. Meantime ill measure the dimensions and try to find some universal plug of something.

Does anyone have a source for this plug and the one that's on the edge of the Bell Housing?

Siraniko 08-02-13 08:36 PM

your tranny will survive without them

You're probably right Siraniko ... however it annoyed me. I found and bought a 1" X 1-1/8" "Rubber Expansion Plug" made by Doorman from one of the Big Box Auto Stores. The 1-1/8" was too deep [it would have hit the ring gear] so: 1. I took it apart. 2. Cut 1/4" off the end with the ROUND hole. 3. Reassembled and then cut the excess threads off. 4. Inserted it into the hole, it's a nice snug fit. 5. Put on thread lock and tightened down the nut. Works great, but do double check clearance to the ring gear. The small one half way up the trans, I will take your advice and ignore. Thanks!

Inspection hole.

The plug is always missing. At most I've duct taped it but mostly just leave it. Water splashes up there but meh.

I just recently teared a little cut on mines. There isnt any oil leaks what so ever ive been wondering what it was too.

SPEKEEZ 08-29-13 07:00 PM

I suspect it's there to allow inspection of the Ring Gear.

mazdaverx713b 08-30-13 01:00 PM

correct, that rubber plug is an inspection plug. you should replace it as it can allow moisture and road grime into the bellhousing.

it wouldn't be a bad idea to post a want to buy ad in the first gen parts for sale/wanted section

Worse thing that could happen is gravel will bounce up in there and damage your clutch. It's a one in a million chance though. Or a mouse could get in and poop!
